Product Description

Prequel to 'The Amityville Horror', describing what happened in the infamous house prior to the arrival of George and Kathy Lutz, the unfortunate souls whose fate is depicted in the first film. The Montelli family, as led by patriarch Anthony (Burt Young), move into the lakeside residence and begin experiencing supernatural problems almost immediately. However, things really take a turn for the worse when eldest boy Sonny (Jack Magner) becomes possessed with an evil spirit which taunts him to murder his own kin.

Described by one critic as "luridly energetic grand guignol", AMITYVILLE 2 is an effective film rather than a good one. The stylish direction, moody score and edgy tone balance a thin script, minimal characterisation and a finale that just tails off. Jack Magner gives an effective performance as the disturbed son, especially given the demands of the plot. According to the Imdb, his only other film credit is FIRESTARTER, another Dino De Laurentiis production. Though nominally based on real events, AMITYVILLE 2 is best viewed as out-and-out gothic horror, featuring one of the most dysfunctional families ever to grace the screen. The brutish father, played by Burt Young, seems just as scary as the demonic forces.
This DVD is by far the best version available, including the courtroom sequence and several other scenes missing from the German and Australian releases. The transfer is generally good, given the film's age. For the record, AMITYVILLE 2 was shot in standard format (1.85:1), not 2.35:1 scope, despite what the box claims. The commentary by Stephen Jones and Kim Newman is entertaining and informative, though it's clear they don't think much of the movie. The 'extended lost souls scene' is a series of production photographs. It's suggested that the film's ending was radically changed during post-production. Given the arbitrary sfx set-pieces and obvious loose ends, this may well be the case.

Ok, the transfer is pretty good. little white specs here and there but no big deal. and its widescreen (1.85) but it states its 2.35. not the case. its got these lobby cards 5 to be excat. and a nice booklet. very well made. some thought was put into this dvd no doubt.. if a fan of the film, pick it up..

This movie plays as a prequel to The Amityville Horror. It follows the DeFeo family and their son, Sonny's decent into madness. Those who have seen the first film will know that Sonny kills his family because the house told him to and the lead up to the murders in this film is quite intense. The atmosphere is just dreadful in this film. You almost feel dirty yourself just watching it. That's what makes The Possession so good. You actually feel something when you're watching it and it's not easy to find horror films that get under the viewers skin so easily. The effects are a little outdated and it ends with an ending that feels a little unfinished but if I had to chose my favourite Amityville sequel it would easily be this one.

The set itself is great. It comes it a nice slipcase and included inside are 5 lobby cards (sort of like postcards with different images from the film), as well as a beautiful collectors booklet which goes into some detail about the film, the story behind it and some of the behind-the-scenes of making it. The film is presented with a nice anamorphic transfer which has little grain and is quite clear throughout. There's a commentary included which gives some good insight into the film, a short re-creation of a missing scene in the film which isn't too exciting and that's about it.

If you haven't seen this film and you're a fan of the genre then I advise you to pick up this release as it's the best edition going around. They just don't make them like this any more.

This is definitely the best edition of Amityville 2 to get, it looks wonderful and features and booklet and some cards with pictures on them along with a nice outer sleeve which really gives it a fancy look, I don't know why the 1st film never got this treatment. The special features are pretty lame and uninteresting. The disc looks great with a metallic blue colour. The film was pretty good though the 2nd half just seemed like an exorcist rip off, also don't expect this to be true to the books because it really isn't.

For those of you who don't know, this is easily the best exorcisim movie ever made, even though it's not the main theme running through the movie. It's 'hands down' the best amytiville movie out there & this collector's edition was a dream come true!!! Great extras, nice presentation box etc... "Now how about a collector's edition of SALEM'S LOT (the greatest horror ever made) or is that asking too much?"
