Calexico are a rich band at the moment. They seem to have found their niche. They are producing better and better music, and it is great to hear this development as new records appear. At Glastonbury last year, they played a superb set, and on the back of the just-released Feast of Wire, I started to think they might be the best band in America right now. Now I'm not saying I was wrong, but...

The problem with Convict Pool, a twenty-minute or so EP, is the heady expectation that comes with it. For a band that can right now do no wrong, you expect brilliance. But you don't get it here. The music is fine, though not as good as on the last album. Only a fraction less brilliant, but still. Actually, that's not quite true. If you bought the album in the UK, then you will already have half the songs on this EP as part of the European bonus tracklist on Feast of Wire. And it feels like something has been stolen from you.

No matter how good the filler tracks in between the familiar songs from Feast of Wire (and they are good, though not quite great), the familiarity of so much of this new release, and the too-high price tag, robs Calexico of some of their glory. You just can't help thinking you didn't need to buy this.

Ok, it's not bad, not at all. If you don't have Feast of Wire, it's a good purchase. But still, if you don't have Feast of Wire, you'd be better off getting that instead. Maybe this EP is just for completists, but even they are buying something that will diminish their own love for Calexico just a fraction.

Fingers are crossed, then, that the next full-length release lives up to the billing. By rights, it should be wonderful. This EP just isn't.
