Folk music is, as they say, a very broad church. The one thing this collection does not do is to test the limits but, while fans of both traditional and contemporary folk may gasp in shock and horror at some of the tracks and artists listed, there is no denying that all of the songs are indeed folk.

Compiled in very rough chronological order, from the vast catalogue that EMI has in its vaults, it mainly acts as a history of popular or mainstream folk of the 1960s and 1970s, but with a few more up-to-date examples thrown in. From the fluffy 1960s TV-friendly Kingston Trio and Seekers, the 1970s electric folk/pop of Lindisfarne and Steeleye, the more earnest Bert Jansch and Clifford T Ward, and the more modern and eclectic Townes van Zandt and Sheila Chandra, there is plenty of variety here.

The compilers have been careful not to have too much contrast of style or mood from track to track, with the possible exception of the Albion Band's funereal "Poor Old Horse" being sandwiched between the fragrant "Watercolour Morning" and the "Rose of Tralee", so that it does make for easy listening. And it is good to have a glimpse of the lighter side of Richard Thompson to close things off - (Don't Sit On My) Jimmy Shands.

All the recordings are the originals - Donovan's "Catch The Wind" is exception, being his 1969 reworking of the song when he switched labels. At over two hours on a budget label this is both interesting history and a bargain.

The Best . . . . . , don't think so. It's a joke right? If not the compiler should get out more and actually see and listen to some Folk Music. Some gems but mostly tosh. Don't bother

Let's see, no Guthrie, no Dylan, no Baez, no Seeger, no Mitchell, no Young, need I go on? There's some quite nice 'pop folk' here and there, but the best folk album in the world ever? I mean really.
