Christian Thielemann is certainly the most prodigiously gifted Wagner conductor at work these days: his Ring at Bayreuth has been stunning, likewise his Tannhauser. His recording of Parsifal, also from Vienna, is an especially important addition to any Wagnerian's shelves. But what about this 'Tristan'? Orchestrally, it is quite superb: the Staatsoper band are in fine form, with voluptuous sonorities of the kind that only Karajan, both with his Berliners and in his Bayreuth recording, could conjure. There is no doubt that Thielemann is the master of this score. So far, so good. The let down is the singing: uniformly uniform! There is hardly a hint of characterisation from any except perhaps Petra Lang as Brangaene. Voigt is totally anonymous and Moser is just wet! So, while there is nothing especially bad about the acting etc, there is nothing especially good either. For a modern recording, Stemme/Domingo are far more incisive and strongly drawn for Pappano/EMI, even if the ROH Orchestra is a little lightweight in the strings compared to their Viennese rivals. But overall, nothing replaces Bohm/Bayreuth or, if you are brave, Karajan/Bayreuth with Modl in breathtaking form.
