Amazon.co.uk Review

Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt corral a wild herd of rampaging children in Cheaper by the Dozen, an enjoyable family flick. When Kate Baker (Hunt) gets a book deal for her chronicle of their abundant family life, she also gets drawn into a book tour--leaving Tom (Martin) to run the house and cope with his new, high-pressure job as a football coach. Naturally, chaos erupts, bringing the family to the brink of meltdown. Cheaper by the Dozen is not a great movie or an important movie or even a surprising movie, but it is a warm-hearted crowd-pleaser. The Bakers' family life is a bit idealised and antiseptic, but anyone looking for an escape from their own less-ideal family lives won't mind. Also featuring Tom Welling, Hilary Duff, Piper Perabo and an uncredited Ashton Kutcher. --Bret Fetzer

5.0 out of 5 stars 12 is the number and its # out of 10, 21 Aug 2004

When i saw this being advertized i thought, boring. But then me and my family went to see it as a treat and i found it absolutly hilarious. Tom (Steve Martin) and Kate Baker (Bonnie Hunt) are the parents of 12 children. They live in the midlands in america but then Tom is offered a new job 3 hours away from where they live. So after hours of arguing with the children who don't want to move house, they eventually move on Tom and Kate's decision. They move but the children hate it there. Although they do have a good laugh when they soak Nora's (Piper Perabo) boyfreinds pants in meat which kind of gets the dog excited, and bites where the smell comes from. But then their mum (Kate) is offered a book tour with her recent book 'Cheaper by the Dozen' and that leaves Tom alone with the kids which he has never done because his wife has always been the one who looks after them. Tom makes her go, but chaos occurs in the house. While being coach of a 3rd division football team and being the coach of 11 sons and daughters (Nora lives with her boyfriend , Hank) he starts to realize he has to do something about it. He tries to get help, but when they hear the number 12 they just put the phone down. The mum finds out whats going on and comes home. Mark gets so fed up, he runs away. Will he be found? Will the family cope? This is a hilarious film for all the family. A good cast aswell including Steve Martin, Bonnie Hunt, Tom Welling, Piper Perabo, Aston Kutcher and Hilary Duff. You will enjoy this and find it funny............ definitly get this!

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun family film, 25 Mar 2004
By Victoria Craven - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Cheaper by the Dozen is a better than average family comedy. It's hardly ground-breaking stuff, but it's a pleasant way to pass the time all the same. The basic premise of the film is this: Tom (Steve Martin) and his wife Kate (Bonnie Hunt) decide to move from their small, yet much-loved country home into a larger house. Their twelve children however, aren't too keen on the idea. They begin to cause all kinds of mischief, and when Kate leaves for New York for two weeks, Tom is left with the overwhelming task of taking care of the brood.

There are some great scenes in the film, in particular the occasion when the younger children decide to split up their eldest sister Norah (Piper Perabo) and her boyfriend Hank (Ashton Kutcher). They soak Hank's underwear in meat, then watch with glee as every dog in the neighbourhood is drawn to the tempting smell of the item. I think it would be fair to say that Cheaper by the Dozen relies more on slapstick gags than witty repotoire, and is therefore more suited to a younger audience.

Due to the fact that there are fourteen main characters within the film, I frequently found it difficult not only to remember their names, but also to follow exactly what was going on. Saying that however, most of the younger children have small roles, whilst the likes of Charlie (Smallville's Tom Welling) and Lorraine (Hilary Duff) take the more challenging roles of angst-ridden teenagers. The film contains many cliches: the well-behaved boy next door (who the brood soon corrupt), the secret passages in the family's huge house, and Kevin, the odd sibling out, who must prove himself to his family.

Directed by Shawn Levy ('Just Married' and 'Big Fat Liar'), the film is not a bad one. It's not a brilliant one either, but is warmly written, well-acted and contains many physical gags that children in particular will love. Ashton Kutcher is hilarious in the film as the self-obsessed boyfriend who claims he is hounded by the paparazzi for the single TV commercial he has starred in. All in all, it's well worth a look.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FAMILY MOVIE, 26 Mar 2004
The storyline is basically about a family with 12 kids ranging from 22 to 3. years old and they live in a country town but dad (steve Martin) gets his dream job as a couch to a rugby team so they move back to the city. His Wife writes a book about raising twlve kids and she goes on a book tour which leaves tom (steve) looking after the kids and coping with a new job, which he finds very hard he realises what his wife does and puts up with every day looking after twelve kids, keeping house clean, cooking homework etc aint easy. It is a very funny film a mixture between problem child and three men and a baby. Although its basically a comedy it also shows how kids cope with moving to the city ie: what problems they face. I brought my neice to see this and we both enjoyed immensly. My verdict great all round family film you would watch again and again.
