Like the North Sea this is far from shallow. Here are 8 tracks of intensity and hidden depth constructed a distinctive sound founded in Indie/Emo with instrumental prominence. Typified with slow soft lyrics and rhythms of varying tempo and shifting force. It starts with a haunting female vocal in 'The News' that weaves into a melody. 'Gewndolyn' provides up tempo and a purposeful beat to contrast with the previous 'Home', preparing you for 'July 23rd' which takes you back down. The second half of the album becomes more adventurous; the title track 'The North Sea' (my favourite) is an atmospheric extended piece that builds up to climax and then bridges to a becalmed finish that has the hallmark of an after-the-storm feeling. 'Top to Bottom' must be an undersea tale dominated by a heavy bass offset by light vocals. 'Drowned' is an 11 minute tempo switcher. 'ETA' is perhaps the most outlandish and harder work but it's good to have an album that leaves something for the next visit.
