Product Description

CD Description

Blues harmonica master Sonny Boy Williamson II defined the urban blues-harp style with his 1950s recordings, and NINE BELOW ZERO collects a generous batch of his best. Signature tunes such as "Don't Start Me Talking", the title cut (from which a U.K. pub-rock band once took their name), and "Eyesight to the Blind" are classic examples of Williamson's trademark sound--thick, lazy vocals, and visceral harmonica work so expressive it could almost be a human voice. Not all of Sonny Boy's biggest songs are included here, but NINE BELOW ZERO still makes for one heck of an introduction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blues with rhythm, 4 Feb 2006
By Dorian Gray "jwdurdin" (London, England) - See all my reviews
I must be the only 18-year-old boy in the world to own this album. No matter. This a comprehensive collection of Sonny Boy Williamson II's Trumpet label recordings, including work as a sideman. It's more upbeat than the later recordings (in 'The Essential Collection', for example), and the singing is more raw and bluesy while the harmonica playing has a real edge to it. It's less commercial and may not be to everyone's taste, but I enjoy this period more than the later stuff. Particularly great tracks are 'Come On Back Home', one of the most up-tempo numbers, and 'Mighty Long Time', powerfully melancholy.
