5.0 out of 5 stars Samurai Jack - the next cartoon hero, 1 Nov 2004
By M. Z. Butcher "zyg904" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Samurai Jack is THE next (actually the current, but he's not hit mainstream yet) big thing. It's a cartoon about a Samurai (called Jack) sent into a future by Aku, the "shapeshifting master of Darkness". In this warped future, the world is ruled by Aku's evil. Jack's quest is to return home to win the fight that caused him to be sent into the future thus preventing Aku from achieving his Evil dominance.

Enough about the plot - it really doesn't matter (although it provides a nice backdrop). What matters is the way this piece of art (it really is) is put together. The drawing is crisp, clean and there is almost no outline on any character. The fighting (there's one "action" piece in most episodes) has little or no blood, and contains a lot of still shots with a fair bit of camera movement. Speech is secondary to the action - with the exception of The Scotsman, who is arguably the 3rd best character in it (behind Jack and Aku). It's hugely watchable by all ages.

Humour, Samurai ethics, Action, Morality - it all comes together in a piece of art that everyone should watch at least once. My ex-flatmates in Aberdeen didn't get it; I laughed through just about every episode. It might be like Marmite - but it's definitly worth trying.
