My personal computer having died on me (post-traumatic stress in progress), I wanted to easily recover the data on my hard disc (it being two months since my last DVD backup). There was one free IDE channel on my replacement PC (with two optical drives on the other channel and two RAID 1 hard drives elsewhere) but a USB connection must be the easy answer. The Belkin external USB2 enclosure from Amazon requires you to screw your hard disc (or an optical disc) into the bottom of the enclosure, check the jumper switch, push on the power and data cables, and then simply (yes, simply) clip it together. Connect the standard power cable to the mains and the USB cable to your computer... and Windows XP finds the 'USB mass storage device'. Yes, the enclosure fan is obvious, but it's no noisier than the works laptop on which I'm typing this. Everything except the screwdriver is provided, and the job took twenty minutes including the removal of the drive from my deceased PC.

It's easy to put together and allows you to use internal drives as external drives however the fan is loud

This unit is nicely designed, and works well.

NOTE: It is NOT compatible with ATA133 or hard drives over 137Gb.

I didn't know this, and realised too late when a couple of hard drives I tried to use wouldn't work.

Still, for older hard drives, and CD/DVD-RW it's a great unit at a great price.
