Product Description

With the Black & Decker LZR2 laser level and pipe detector in your toolbox you can forget about struggling to mark out your work area with a traditional level. Either fastened to the wall with a pin or hand-held, this compact unit provides a laser-generated perfectly level straight line from which you can work. In an improvement on some other units the LZR2 is auto-levelling so no manual intervention is required at all.

In addition to its levelling abilities, this model also includes built-in metal and voltage detectors, allowing you to detect hidden pipes, beams and electric cables and avoid drilling into them. Other features are rubber casing that makes the unit comfortable to hold and use, target cones to enhance the visibility of the laser line at long distances and a storage case to protect the laser during storage and transport. Uses one 9-volt battery.

I bought the LZR2 as I had a few DIY projects to do in a new house and needed both a lazer level and pipe and voltage detectors. Seeing the LZR2 I thought my luck was in as all three things where in one handy unit. The unit itself is quite chunky to hold but well designed as you can get a good grip of it and pins are provided to hold the unit in place on a wall for hands free operation. Using the lazer level is straight forward however it only projects a horizontal line and not a plumb line.

The metal pipe detector works fine but it is very sensitive and I have to remember to remove my wedding ring before using it as it would give false readings if I kept my ring on.

The voltage detector is the big downfall of this product. I cannot get it to work satisfactorily. Each time you use the LZR2 you calibrate it for the wall you are working on, however, the LED would start blinking away indicating a voltage nearby even when there was not one. Even when I tested it on a wooden window frame it still detected a voltage even though the sensitivity was turned down to the lowest setting. At first I thought I had a defective unit and exchanged it for another but sadly the replacement also suffered from the same problem of it detecting a voltage that was not there. It was also inconsistent, I could run the voltage detector over an area of wall and it would flash away indicating a cable nearby yet when I would move the detector over that area again there would be nothing making this function of the unit unreliable.

I have now taken the unit back to the store I bought it from as the lack of a working voltage detector and lack of being able to use the laser to project a plumb line means it does not do the things I need it to do.

I have to admit I am surprised that anyone could fail to find this product a superb addition to their toolbox. I have lost count of the amount of times I have used it around my new house for various projects my wife has brow beaten me into completing. I am pretty sure that without it I would have either flooded my kitchen or discharged 240 volts into myself. To buy each of these functions separately would cost you a small fortune and I think this is a great price especially for a Black and Decker product. Highly recommended!!

I primarily got this unit for fitting some curtain poles, I needed to make sure that they were level with each other over the 2 windows, as a eagle eyed partner would spot any off tolerance and boy would I know about it. The unit comes with 2 attachments that fir on the back, one is a pin that pushes into the wall, the other a hook. Both allow the level to hang against the wall and project the line across the whole width of the room. This made getting all the holes exactly the same level (pity the ceilings are out).

On the plus side, it also has built in a metal pipe-work detector, main voltage detector and a stud (both wood and metal) detector. This ensures that you do not drill/hammer into any pipe-work and cause damage, or any electrical cables and fry yourself. This I thought would be an added bonus. However, sometimes it can be hit and miss. I know there is pipe-work in one place, but the reading sometimes says it is all over, or sometimes correctly locates it. The same with electrical cables. Sometimes it finds it exactly, others there is a wide margin where it says it is. Now, when I want to drill, I check with the unit, and drill very slowly with little pressure, and keep checking the depth, use shallower crews and never put up anything too heavy, just in case.
