A glorious return to form, 11 Feb 2004
This isn't just the first "real" single from George Michael's first "real" album since 1996's "Older", it's also the first single since George Michael's life took a major shift for the better (controversies have passed and a long-term relationship has arrived), and every bit of that positivity is on show here. Starting out with an almost whimsical, pitched-up George Michael humming along in bossa nova style, the record quickly kicks in as a breezy, mid-tempo affair. The softly strumming guitars and sentimental lyrics may hint at his maturity, but a Phil Collins record this is not. For one thing, his vocals are as energetic and convincing as ever, and the creative touches that George has always been so good at- the little electronic flourishes and surprise lyrics at the end- seal the deal nicely. George is happy again, and if this unseasonably warm sample is any indication, his new LP will be all the better for it.
