This recording allows a modern listener to hear the mighty powerhouse that was New York's Metropolitan Opera in the glory days of the 1950s. Consider the cast: Bjorling, de los Angeles and Warren, with Merrill--Robert Merrill, for Pete's sake!--in a mere supporting role. Now, try to assemble in your mind a cast of contemporary singers that is half as good.

I once owned this performance on Lp. Some years ago, I replaced it with an EMI CD which hyper-exaggerated all consonants to a remarkably annoying degree and was generally harsh-sounding from the first note to the last.

This Naxos version is remastered from Lp pressings, but with skill and love. Until EMI shows some respect for its own masters, this is the version to purchase.

This is one of the best versions of Pagliacci around. Unfortunately Naxos was sloppy with their transfer and there is an annoying low frequency hum in tracks 23 on. If you want this recording, I suggest that you buy the EMI which does not have this problem.
