I've tried a variety of in-ear earphones for my mp3 player, including Sennheiser, Sony, Sony noise-cancelling and cheapies. These Shure earphones are the best. They provide the combination of sound isolation and sound quality that none of the others have been able to match. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is becaue I want the Shure E5, which are several times the price. The only alternative I know of to consider might be earphones by Etymotic, but I decided against them after reading reviews of the sound generated by banging the earphone cables.

Earphones that come with portable devices often aren't very good, and people will be surprised by the increase in sound quality that can be achieved by upgrading. Earphones like these that project into the ear are so much more comfortable for long-term use than the traditional type.

I've been using Sony MDR-EX70 earphones with my MP3 player for several years now, and for the £30 they cost, I thought they were excellent. I kept toying with getting some Shures or Etypmotics to replace them to see what benefit the extra money gave, but never got round to it. After Xmas, I had a bit of spare cash, so I bought a set of E3s.

When they arrived, I was distinctly underwhelmed - no bass whatsoever compared to the Sonys, and a very forward treble. I tried all the rubber earphones supplied with them, and none made any difference - I was beginning to feel I'd wasted a lot of money.

I then tried the foam ear sleeves, and there was an immediate improvement. The bass wasn't as loud as on the Sonys, but it was at least there. I ordered a large bag of foam sleeves, as they look like they will need regular replacement, and decided to persevere for a bit.

One very important point - these earphones sound dreadful out of the packet, but they improve enormously with a week or so of use. They now have clear, well-defined bass and a nicely integrated treble which is detailed without being shrill. They sound noticeably better than the Sonys, and I don't regret the purchase at all. Be warned - they are brutally revealing of poor source material - all the drive noise, hum and crackles from your MP3 player will be clearly audible!

The only downsides are that the foam sleeves (which are a must to get the best sound quality) are disposable and may not last too long (and cost £2 a pair for replacements), and the stiff cable makes a lot of noise when it rubs against clothing etc when you are walking. Other than that, they are a very worthwhile upgrade to the £30 Sonys - the extra cash makes an audible difference.

Having read the reviews for this item I was a bit suprised to read about someone actually harming themselves whilst using these. I have used Plugs for a good few years now ranging from Etymotic ER3Ps to Sures E5s and I have never had a problem. You should never shove the plugs in but place them in the ear til you get a good seal, I find the best way to see if this has been obtained is to turn on the TV before you put them in and if you can;t hear the TV at all when you've place the plugs in you 9/10 have a good seal. The tell tale signs that you don't have a good seal is a rather tinny sound and the Bass tends to be affected. It is very easy just to wiggle the plugs about til there is an improvement. These plugs aren't as precise as my etymotics but they seem to be far more comfortable to wear over longer periods as there is no fatigue when wearing them, something that has been reported by etymotic users. Personally I think that they are a very good pair of plugs, not as good as the etymotics but at �70 cheaper they are a bargain. I have used them with my I-pod and have found that they do a very good job. the biggest problem with plugs is that if you are expecting a phone call or a visitor to ring your door bell you feel you can't relax as there is no way you could possibly hear either so you are constantly looking, But if you are a serious music lover like me you'll love the way they transport you away to a completely different world. Just be prepared to be called unsociable. These are a good buy if you aren't bothered with plugs right in your ear.
