Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Blockhead is best known as an NYC-based hip-hop producer who has turned out beats for underground rappers such as Aesop Rock and Slug. When he's not working the boards for such leftfield luminaries though, he runs a dope line in downtempo sounds, a selection of which are presented here. You may well be thinking at this point that there is quite enough instrumental hip-hop in the world already, thank you very much--and you'd be quite right. But it's testament to Blockhead's talent that this debut collection of night-baked nuggets sounds anything but superfluous.

Contrasting his bright, tight beats with melancholic moods (that swing between the lugubrious and the filmic), Blockhead's game is consistently on point. He wafts in weightless jazz smoke and incorporates uplifting melodies when needed, has a wicked way with a vocal sample and knows just when to change up the flow. Not essential perhaps, but highly recommended ear candy for all true beat heads. --Ern Bay

4.0 out of 5 stars DJ Shadow - lite?, 10 April 2004
By Alpster (Surrey, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Bought the cd on the recommendation of a newspaper reviewer (well I liked the description), and while I don't think its in the same class as say DJ Shadow, its clear that Blockhead from his work with Aesop Rock and this album, is similarly devoted to hip hop beats and the intricate use of samples. Opening track 'Insomniac Olympics' is absolute class though with its sample of 'Fanfare For A Common Man'- the best single this year, the best of the album is in the first half such as 'Sunday Seance' and 'A Better Place'. Whilst on the very odd occasion the tracks do drift into the distance, I would highly recommend the album, and initially see it as a slightly more accessible album than say 'Entroducing' but an album that just falls short of that masterpiece, but maybe thats just me.

5.0 out of 5 stars As Moving As Instrumental Hip-Hop Gets, 3 Aug 2005
Completely vocal free aside from the odd sample, the debut from relative Ninja Tune newcomer is a journey to the depths of feeling possible in Hip-Hop. Often today some positively wicked tracks are lost behind second rate vocals like P. Diddy's "Badboys For Life" and Prodigy's ill-fated single "Baby's Got A Temper" where, if provided a touch more attention, the sound alone would triple the quality of the track provided the vocals were completely eradicated. That's never a problem here. While it would be nice to imagine, say, Gift Of Gab or Buck 65 throwing some rhymes over top a track here or there, each one is a pure sound complete in it's own right. While they pretty much all follow the same formula, they sound fresh and invigorating and, at the least, make me hungry for more of the like. It'll be interesting to see what collaborations come his way in upcoming months. Keep your eye out for this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars borehead - boredom by cavelight, 1 Jun 2004
technically as a dj/producer/beatmaker this is a great achievement, seamless production utilising some nice samples. yet as a record its remarkably boring, and morphs into one long melancholic soundtrack to a boring walk in an autumn park. lacking the creative spark of aesop rock, and with some cut and paste drum breaks this would be much more boring were it not for insomniac olympics, which got me really excited as a first single.
