Henry Mancini was one of the best American soundtrack composers of the 1950s and '60s (and in fact did solid work up until the end of his career). Nevertheless, he remains best known for impossibly catchy little tunes like "The Pink Panther Theme", "Baby Elephant Walk" (a tune you've heard hundredsof times even if you didn't know what it was called), and the drop-dead-cool twang-guitar instrumental "Peter Gunn", not to mention the immortal "Moon River". All of these and more are collected on MIDNIGHT MOONLIGHT & MAGIC: THE VERY BESTOF HENRY MANCINI, a compilation that makes a strong case for Mancini not only as a great soundtrack composer, but as a pop craftsman of the highest order, especially when he was working with his frequent collaborator Johnny Mercer. Ennio Morricone and the like might have greater hipster credibility, and former Mancini pianist John Williams might have his eclipsed his mentor in terms of box office receipts, but you probably don't find yourself singing their tunes in the shower like you do with Mancini's.
