5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - Album of Year Contender, 19 May 2004
By Steps "steps_lowe" (Luxembourg) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Between recording their debut album, the really rather good 'From Here On In', Londoner's South had a stint with the newly DJ Shadowless trip hop outfit UNKLE on the soundtrack to the euro friendly Brit crime thriller 'Sexy Beast'.

'With The Tides' sees the threesome trade in some of their dancier beats of their little heard debut for some acoustic guitars and some rather natty banjo plucking. Don't let that put you off, as South' second album is a wonder from start to finish. The type of second album you only hear very rarley, like Radioheads 'The Bends', Elbow's 'Cast Of Thousands' and more pertinently The Doves 'Last Broadcast'. Lazy journalism will undoubtedly see them grouped with uber indie god's Coldplay but on the likes of recent single 'Loosen Your Hold' the storming 'Colours in Waves' and the sobering 'Straight Lines to Badlands' South occupy territory reminiscent of early Stone Roses, U2 and yes Radiohead.

'With The Tides' is an album that takes a few listens to get under your skin but once it does its going to stay there. Expect this to figure in nearly all the best of 2004 lists come December.

4.0 out of 5 stars Going South? Eventually., 2 Jul 2004
By Mr. M. L. Hawes "Mitchmusic" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Firstly, let's get over the hype. This album has been vaunted as this years 'Cast Of Thousands' - Elbow, or 'Last Broadcast' - Doves. Well, it's not.

It starts in great style with the first three tracks hitting pretty spectacular heights, but it struggles to maintain the pace from then on. The fact that I have given it four stars indicates that it is a good record, but to be fair to South, it is cruel to compare the record with the two aforementioned titles.

With that aside, what should the listener expect? Stirring tunes with good melodies, power and grace and one or two songs that will stay with you throughout this year and the next. In fact, it seems a shame to criticise this record, but for me it falls down with a slightly muddy production, which leaves the vocals too deep in the mix.

It's a good record and bodes very well for the future, but I do think to myself with a better producer it could have been as great as many magazines and previous reviewers have suggested.

5.0 out of 5 stars making the right waves, 21 April 2004
"With The Tides" is the eagerly awaited second album from indie-funkstersSouth. Its been over two years since they released their beat-driven debutLP "From Here On In" but the wait has truly been worth it.
With The Tides is an album full of seriously addictive songs. Think a moreacoustic driven Stone Roses mixed with the epic beauty of Good Will Outera Embrace and the beats of James Lavelle and you're getting close. Thefirst three songs are obvious standouts, but the rest of the album doesn'tdisappoint with more of the same infectious and melodious songs.
It is obvious that South have grown since their first album as this ismore mature and probably a more commercial sound. However, they still seemto be shunned in favour of more media friendly 'indie-rock' like FranzFerdinand, which is a shame because South definitely deserve to be upthere. The only disappointing aspect of the album is the poor cover artand inlay, which is impossible to read!
