Product Description

CD Description

Vancouver's Destroyer has been a fairly prolific project for sometime-New Pornographer Dan Bejar. YOUR BLUES (2004) is a dense trip through Bejar's grandiose pop. Whereas on previous albums Bejar was joined by other musicians, on YOUR BLUES he is flying mostly solo. It's all synthesizers and midi instrumentation, a one-man band in the truest sense of the word. The bittersweet orchestration on tracks such as "It's Gonna Take an Airplane" adds an extra layer of authenticity tothe lovelorn and hyper-aware tales he spins. It's overdramatic for sure, but it ultimately works because Bejar never takes himself too seriously--so much so that in the press Bejar has dismissed Destroyer as possibly being a "half-baked exercise". Either way, YOUR BLUES is an ambitious work, the kind that reveals more with each subsequent listen, and Bejar's cryptic lyrics certainly afford repeated listens.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant album, highly recommended, 8 Jan 2005
Well, this album has completely blown me away, and since there were no reviews I thought I would recommend it - to anyone with a taste in catchy melodies and the more theatrical early Bowie in updated form. Bejar's vocal sounds a bit like a mix of Bowie and Brett Anderson at his most affected - either you love or you dont. This is great pop, or perhaps great indie-electronica as it might be labelled - all songs are in fact very very good quality songwriting, and very well produced it is too, with only synthesizers and an acoustic guitar making great orchestoral soundscapes. Actually, one of the very best parts is that you can actually hear that it is synthesizers; very smooth. Well done!
