Product Description

Product Description

This black-comedy stars Jason Schwartzman as Ross - a young man, recently split from his girlfriend, and addicted to crystal meth. Over the course of a long weekend Ross battles to get his next fix and fixates over his breakup. His regular drug supplier, Spider Mike, has forgotten where he's put his stash and while he's searching Ross is asked by Spider Mike's girlfriend, Cookie [Mena Suvari] to pick up a friend of hers called Nikki [Brittany Murphy]. Reluctantly he agrees and discovers she may have some drugs for him, from The Cook [Mickey Rourke]. All the time the police are after Spider Mike and in his drug-induced state he decides to track down who has set him up.

From Amazon.co.uk

Spun is an unclassifiable ensemble piece, intentionally bleached of soulfulness and high on visual invention and comic depravity. Set in northern Los Angeles, where meth freaks lurch from one motel room to another in search of companionship and a score, the film stars Jason Schwartzman as Ross, whose life is rapidly disintegrating. Fielding phone messages from his mother and trying in vain to reach an old girlfriend, Ross spends most of his time on a feverish circuit with the half-mad Cookie (Mena Suvari) and Nikki (Brittany Murphy), the dangerously paranoid Spider Mike (John Leguizamo), and a macho drugmaker called the Cook (Mickey Rourke). Director Jonas Akerlund's story is non-existent, but then again Spun is driven by the blurry, hellish energy of a life lived on speed. An obvious influence is Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream, but Akerlund is interested in nightmarish set pieces than tiny horrors of misfired nerve endings and ravaged time. --Tom Keogh

I'd never heard of this film but bought it second hand on the off chance it might be good - and it was. Both I and my flat mate both enjoyed it immensely from the offset.

Seriously, from the opening scene we were like: "This looks good. Let's just hope it can keep it up." And it did.

Funny, stylish, a great musical score, creative direction, naked chicks, drugs, brilliant characters and amazing acting - I mean what more do you want?

Mickey Rourke is great in it as ''The Cook'' and the sadly demised Brittany Murphy looks stunning (in a trashy sort of way) and gives a sterling performance - just one of many by the films cast, because seriously, every actor in the film did a great job!

This film is über, über cool and I agree with another review I saw briefly on here: Cult Classic!! It simply screams cult classic!! That's immediately what I thought when I'd watched it. Sadly with Brittany's death the film looks even more qualified to earn that title one day.

For some reason, not many people have heard of this film and I take great pleasure in looking like a top film boffin when I put them onto a great little flick which they all really enjoy watching. It really is very good and if you're into cinematography, screen writing, directing or film making of any kind - I think you'll really, really, really enjoy this little gem for the creative way it's been shot.

So what are you waiting for: If sex, drugs and rock'n'roll are your thing - okay maybe not rock'n'roll - but if sex, drugs, comedy, creativity and great acting are your thing, then click buy because you're gonna love this title.

Please mark this review as helpful if you found it to be and if not, please comment on why so I can do a better job for you next time. Thanks: )

I watch a lot of movies. A LOT of movies. Writing reviews for what I watch is pretty much straightforward , after all , reviews are simply peoples opinions , in this case , mine!
The thing about this movie is that there are a lot of very talented actors involved , sadly nearly all of them have been in far better movies than this. This is one of those strange movies , where its difficult to put your finger on why you didn't like it - you just didn't ! Mickey Rourke and John Leguizamo deliver stand-out performances and are extremely believable as a meth 'cook' and his dealer ,there 's also good performances by Mena Sevari and Brittany Murphy but the film simply doesn't 'spark'.
The film , without spoiling it for you, is about the main protagonist, Jason Schwartzman, a self absorbed waste of skin , only interested in getting high, and who , through seeking some illegal high, gets involved with a bunch of small time drug manufacturers , inept dealers ,pushers and addicts, eventually the Police get involved and the whole thing quickly spirals into farce. The two Police are SO over the top that whatever believability the movie had up to this point is quickly lost and I found myself wishing for the end to speed into view.
The biggest problem I feel with this movie isn't the acting, or the script (although it does drag in a lot of places )the biggest drawback with this movie is that its as if the director had set out to make a 'cult ' movie - the problem with this is, 'cult' movies are more than the sum of their individual parts , they strike a chord with the audience or they capture the times and feel of when they're set. They ignite the collective imagination and build into cult status by word of mouth over an extended period of time.

Wow, I just viewed "Spun" the other night and I thought this movie was outrageous. This is sort of a guilt-pleasure movie but you want to take shower afterwards.

"Spun" has an impressive cast of recognized actors. The film is, essentially, about a few days in the lives of a group of drug addicts. There is The Cook (Mickey Rourke, he truly makes this story worth watching), who makes the drug (speed) and sells it to Spider Mike (John Leguizamo), a dealer with a junkie girlfriend, Cookie (Mena Suvari, looking infinitely less attractive than she did in "American Beauty"). One of his clients is Ross (Jason Schwartzman), who does a lot of favours for The Cook and his girlfriend, Nikki (Brittany Murphy).

I was surprised at how funny the film was at times. It doesn't drown us in anti-drug messages, nor does it become one of those, equally tedious, drug films where you feel like the sober driver at a drunken party. The humour is dark, certainly, but funny nevertheless. A lot of it comes from a subplot about Frisbee, Patrick Fugit, who is caught by a couple of TV policemen (Peter Stormare and Alexis Arquette) and is told he will be let off if he helps them get Spider-Mike. I will only say of the resulting sequence that he does it with all the subtlety of an undercover policeman with his badge stuck to his forehead.

This is a film with a lot of energy, that seems, like its characters, not entirely sure where it is going, but determined to get there, and quickly. Although I am sure it is boring to be surrounded by people on speed when you are sober, this film almost makes you feel like you are on speed too.
