5.0 out of 5 stars
go for it, 6 May 2004
By A Customer
I spent months trying to decide on a digital camera and eventually chose this one because:a)its small, but heavy enough to stop your hand shaking too much when trying to take a decent picture (as can happen with some of the lighter ones) b) for the price, its packed with features, the 3mp is plenty for most people's needs, unless you want to make poster-sized prints; it has video recording with audio which most at this size and price dont (the only other one i found with audio was the kodak easyshare which feels like a brick and is too bulky for me to carry around regularly); a decent optical zoom; well planned design, ie not too fiddly, sometimes the dials on digital cameras are a real nuisance; shutter lag not too much at all...i could go on on the features, but it'd take too long. c)its not too technical...i'm more of a point and shoot gal, and this has enough pre-set scene modes for me not to worry about remembering what white balance and exp i should be using for a candlelit foto (tho you can play around with the technical settings separately, to an extent, if you are so inclined) d)its nikon - well respected brand. all in all, i think ive made the right choice, and i dont think you'd be disappointed with this camera if you're looking for mid-range compact, it really does have pretty much everything you'd need or expect from a camera in this price bracket

A good buy, 24 Mar 2004

I bought this camera as an upgrade for my Kodak DC3400, but mainly for these reasons:*I wanted something small and compact to travel with. The DC3400 was as heavy as my SLR camera. *I already had two other electronic items that use Secure Digital/Multimedia cards (PDA and camcorder), and did not want to buy a camera which would require me to buy another type of card. *It was based on the strength of its predecessor, the Coolpix 3100. For anyone who has never used a digital camera, this is a fairly simple one to use straight out of the box, but it's best to read the manual (which for a manual is quite good reading)! There are loads of picture modes, it's worth reading up about those. I've tried most of them, the one that has impressed me the most is the Panoramic mode and the ArcSoft software on the CD. The picture quality is very good for a 3 megapixel camera. Movie playback is good but uses QuickTime which is ok if you don't mind installing another bit of software to view films. The CD had lots of software that I'm not going to use, but for anyone without picture editing software it might be useful. In addition, it only uses two AA batteries the batteries provided lasted about 3 days. It's compact size means it's light to carry and to travel with. It's a good buy for someone who wants to use their camera in a variety of conditions. For the first time buyer, this is a good camera to start with, or the Coolpix 3100 (if you already use CompactFlash). Anyone wanting to upgrade from 1 or 2 megapixel cameras but doesn't want to splash out the extra on a 4 megapixel camera (yet!), this is a worthwhile investment.

Why it is not quite 5 stars!!!, 29 Sep 2004
This is a really good little camera. It's size means that you won't be making excuses to leave this camera at home, you will be happy to take it anywhere you want to go. I also think it is easy to use, so it is perfect for any beginner in digital photography. It's picture quality is good and because of this it is also a good upgrade if you have been with digital for a few years but want much better quality photos. It hasn't got all the manual options that some cameras have got but that is because it is not for that market, it is for people who want a small, easy to use camera that will give them good results! The only thing it lacks is a package that its predecessor had. The Nikon Coolpix 3100 came with rechargable batteries and instead of an internal memory it came with a card, now if your new to digital this will make no difference, but anyone who has used digital will understand the benefits of having removable memory. But that isn't the be all and end all, as with all digital cameras I would recommend that you buy a memory card for it to store a decent amount of photos, and there is your removable memory problem sorted, and you'll probably want some rechargable AA batteries if you haven't already got some, trust me when I say they are much more economical, waste and wallet wise. This is a good camera, and judged against others in its rank, is probably one of the best there is, it possesses the qualities that the mass market needs in a camera and manages to pull it off with a better feeling body compared to similar Fuji cameras which feel like kids toys. The reason that I haven't given it 5 stars is because Nikon have taken away the priceless extras that they used to give you, but other than that there is little fault to find especially for the price it now is.
