5.0 out of 5 stars Good solid film scanner, 10 Jul 2004
I selected this scanner after doing some research on internet, it and its previous models had good reviews and I trust the Minolta brand. I had no problems setting up the drivers on my XP system. 5 minutes with the manual had me scanning the negs I have been meaning to print for the last ten years into the computer. It takes about 5 minutes to scan a strip of 5 negs, including loading, indexing, scanning and post-processing. I use quite a high resolution scan which produces a 4MB jpeg file which takes my 3GHz system about 15 seconds to process once the scan has completed. I am more than happy with it. It automatically sorts out the colour mask of the negs so no need to tell the software what type of colour neg film you are using. It can scan b/w and colour negs and b/w and colour trannies. I am happy to recommend this scanner.

    2.0 out of 5 stars A Point of Concern, 23 Sep 2005
    By A Customer
I owned a Minolta Scan Dual IV for twelve months, using it rarely at first and then intensively over the last month. As other reviewers have commented, it is capable of producing good scans, appropriate to the price. However, as other reviewers have also commented, on my machine's first birthday, the transport mechanism started locking-up on the fourth frame of the film carrier. Whilst this was corrected on the first few occasions by re-starting the scanner, it quickly became a fatal fault. It appearas to be a firmware fault within the scanner.

The recurrent nature of this fault, as related in the various reviews, confirms that this is a fundamental design fault; consequently, I have no confidence in Konica Minolta products. So, now I need a new film scanner - where's the Nikon catalogue?

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the complaints -Do it right and it will work, 13 May 2005
By Andre (Somerset United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I wanted to buy a scanner but not the ones costing £400+ What I was left with was either this model or the Jeesops primescan. After much research I plumped for this and I do not regret it.

I was nervous of the comments about it not installing correctly(see amazon.com reviews) but if you obey the instructions then it is hastle free on XP Pro +SP2. Of course because no two computers are the same there will always be some people for whom this machine will not work. I know of no add-on device that works 100% for everyone. This is the price we pay when we can unscrew our computer and shuffle PCI cards to our content.

Back to the machine. It installed well. I noticed first that the actual scanning process is quite noisy but not so much to put you off. The negative holder may be plastic but is very sturdy. Th slide adaptor looks equally good though I do not scan slides.

On quick scan the results soon came in. I was disappointed that the dust removing does not work unless you scan from within photoshop elements. Minor prob really. You do have a good control over how you want to scan and, if you read the pdf manual, your options are even wider.

Scan quality was superb. I am scanning family snaps and the detail I as obtaining surprised me. Unless you are a professional I cannot see why you would want anything more complex than this. Ask yourself how many times do you print out full 8 X 10 shots. Not many I think. Saying that the results can easily be printed at this size.

Batch mode lets you can a strip of negatives at a time, setting up the parameters firstly. What else can I say, it works.

The construction is light and does have a plastic feel to it but not to a detracting level. The packaging is good and even a USB cable was provided.

Wsing a Epson r800 I printed out results and have to say they look even better than the originals. Bear in mind that my negatives are several years old, processed by no-one special and orignially printed by the cheapest high street option. As I have already said - unless you are a professional.......

What negatives can I give. I am always nervous of anything that has a motor because surely that will be the first thing to go. I am not too keen on the front door. I would have preferred some spring mechanism so it would automatically close when not in use. The software works but it has a dated look and doesn't have that XP polish. But as long as it does the job it that so important?

All in all though I would recommend that if this is your budget then this is the ONLY optilon for you. Avoid the Primescan despite its use of ICE. A good web search will reeal its flaws.
