Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It was no surprise that the first Harry Potter games were a huge success, but what was unusual was that they were actually pretty good. Millions of fans will be pleased to hear that the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets game is even better.

Taking its visual and audio cues from the movies but sticking closer to the book than a two-hour film ever could, the PS2 game begins as Harry starts his second year at Hogwarts despite an ominous warning from Dobby the House Elf. At its heart Chamber of Secrets is a 3-D platform game, similar to Super Mario or Jak & Daxter, with the same basic controls being used for the majority of the game. However, the nature of the story means the game is peppered with various mini-games and side quests, including Quidditch and Wizard duels.

In between the major quests you get a chance to explore Hogwarts, which is impressively massive and filled with hidden secrets--the collecting of Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans being of particular importance since they can then be traded with Ron's brother for everything from Famous Witches and Wizards Cards to upgrades for your Quidditch kit.

If the game has only one fault it's the extremely long and unusually frequent loading screens that keep popping up, and which you soon get very tired of seeing. It's not nearly enough to ruin the game though, which must go down as one of the best book/movie conversions of all time. --David Jenkins

5.0 out of 5 stars Yay for Potter and EA games, 8 Mar 2004
By Suzi Thorne (Brighton, UK) - See all my reviews
I was bought the first game for xmas, then the following year got this... the graphics are so much better - it completely blows the socks off the first one.

The castle's much bigger, the grounds are interesting, there are loads of extra mini games and lots of flying. The big-bad at the end is really easy to beat, once you've worked out how, but there are some really difficult bits.

Enjoyed it so much, I've just ordered the PS2 version of the first game as it is set in this Hogwarts rather than the first one. Can't wait for the 3rd game.

On the downside... I had no life with this game until I completed it, much to the boyfriend's disgust as it was his PS2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant game so much is better than the last, 20 Nov 2002
I Think this is a brilliant game. graffics are outstanding and the way the have set out the "days" make much more sense. it has actually stuck quite closly to the actual storyline. Night time adventures are made more fun by prowling prefects and ghosts that "steal" your bertie botts beans (lets hope they dont take the good flavors). Character development is a lot better but you still tend to find hermione annoying (or is that just me?). Any Potter fan should play this game. and for the arachniphobics out there, aragog isnt that bad.

The only problem with this game is the lack of particular things. Myself i found shouting "wheres Dobby!?!" as he doesn't come into the game at the begining. Theres a definitive lack of the proffessor we love to laugh at, Lockart, and for all those who like snape there is such a lack of him.

With the main adventure and lots of mini advetures to do i think anyone would enjoy this game. and it will certainly keep you entertained and enticed for a few hours a day. and i believe people will keep re-playing the game too. I'm going to shut up now though before i revel too much about whats in the game, Have Fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good game with a few faults., 14 Dec 2002
By M. Thornton (Swansea, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this game with some trepidation after reading poor reviews of the first. I am pleased to say I am really enjoying it! As a relatively experienced gamer I was afraid it would be too easy but it isn't - it's just about right for the non-obsessive gamer. The controls are easy to master and the game itself is challenging without being impossible; also you are given enough guidance that you don't have to spend hours searching for the right door/portal/secret passage. The game loosely follows the plot of the novel and once you get to Hogwarts it works in a day/night format: during the day you play Quidditch and follow challenges set by the teachers to learn new spells. At night you sneak about avoiding the prefects to complete certain tasks. It's quite addictive: even though I've read the book from cover to cover I still found myself trying to get to the next day/night to find out what happens next. The vocals are good - not the movie actors but similar voices - and the music also helps to make it atmospheric. The graphics are excellent and you can do lots of exploring and find secret passages etc. around the castle without having to worry about running out of time.

The most annoying thing about this game is the long load times, both between certain scenes and when saving and reloading games. It's also a little repetitive in places: for example in the spell tasks where you always seem to be fighting the same monster ie the ugly statue thing with wings. Once you get the hang of how to defeat it it's relatively easy on the next few tasks. Sneaking past the prefects is also a pain - it's fun to start with but after about the third night it gets boring.

Overall I really liked this game and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a fun, engaging game that does not require hours and hours of painstaking work to complete but equally is not over in half an hour. I'm very much looking forward to the next one!
