Amazon.co.uk Review

The second album from Home Counties emotional hardcore stalwarts Hundred Reasons, Shatterproof Is Not a Challenge sees them consolidating the punk-rock revolution they partly sparked off on these shores: one that rejects the snotty rush of UK punk, instead harking back to American post-hardcore touchstones like Fugazi, Quicksand, and At The Drive-In. Hundred Reasons offer a poppy, mainstream take on this most defiantly underground of musical genres, but no qualms, they do it very well: the production clarity demonstrated on "What You Get" and "The Great Test" renders hirsute frontman Colin Doran's skinny roar in spittle-flecked high-resolution, and supplies an agreeably punchy presence to the twin-guitar interplay handled by Paul Townshend and Larry Hibbitt. And while often vague, Doran's lyrics frequently attain a sort of tear-pricked emotional resonance: "Sing this with me now/ Try to harmonise this," goes the mantra-like 'Harmony', gaining strength in every plucky repetition.

If there's any criticism here, it's that Hundred Reasons appear to have found a successful formula and stubbornly stuck to it: "Pop" sounds uncomfortably like a band ripping off themselves, and even a pair of ballads, "Still Be Here" and "Makeshift", appear to be tacked on just because that's what well-rounded rock-albums are supposed to do. In future, a touch more variety would prove a real boon. But in short bursts, Shatterproof Is Not a Challenge remains a bracing example of sturdy, cathartic punk-rock, and we very much suspect that's exactly what Hundred Reasons were after all along. -– Louis Pattison

CD Description

Second album from Surrey post-hardcore crew follows 2002's successful 'Ideas Above Our Station'. Recorded once again with producer Dave Sardy in New York, the album features a rawer, more ragged, aggressive and metal-influenced sound than their debut, without sacrificing the melody which made it soaccessible. Includes the singles 'The Great Test' and 'WhatYou Get'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hundred Reasons then., 31 July 2005
By Mr. J. Haslam "Mo-zizzo" (Derbyshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Okay So it's another band, but this isn't any old run off the mill band, this is an immense album of a truly epic proportion. There's no slump in the quality of songs on this album, from the first 'Savanna' to the last 'Makeshift' they all ooze in originality and never faulter. With a grunge-like-crawl
they slaughter your ears with quality that a majority of bands cannot hope to match in their short, manufactured life-span.
Think Foo Fighters, mixed with Jimmy Eat World, with some Papa-Roach chucked in for an extra Beef-up. All the melodies Crunch and Roar at you, always maintaing an amazing standard whilst conjouring up catchy riffs and vocal lines, that concrete themselves in an unsuspecting listeners ears.

I recommend this album, not only because it's an incredible feat for a band that is only their second helping, I recommend it as it's a breath of fresh air and deserves a place in any music lovers collection. BUY IT!!!!! oh yeah and it's British! a good non-manufactured British band aswell!?!?!?!?! unbelievable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant follow up, 13 May 2004
This is Hundred Reasons follow-up album to "Ideas above our station". As it usually goes in the music industry, i expected this album to be nothing compared to the first. I was proved wrong. Its just as good if not better than the first one. Hundred reasons are a local band to me, so i once had the pleasure of meeting them in their early years, and its true nice people make fantastic music!
The album begins with "savanna" a song dedicated to heros of this world with lyrics such as "Get on your knees for saviours". There is no bad song on this album. Track 10, "Pop" sees a change of vocalist, which happens on the first album as well. It helps to give variation and depth to the album. My personal favourite song though has to be "Truth with elegance" which is simply earth-shatteringly good! It has power and you will find that u cannot resist bellowing out the words as you go along with it, fantastic!
Their two recent singles, "What You Get" and "The Great Test" are both on this album, so it does have some recognisable stuff.
Hundred reasons sound a bit like Incubus, with their more peaceful moments and their powerful moments too.
I would recommend this album to anyone, i have already done so to friends and family, who now say that they listen to it most days. Whatever mood u are in, this is the album to listen to, it can capture all your emotions, whether its happiness, sadness, love, or heartbreak, this is the one for you.
This album ends with the fantastic "makeshift" which is a very chilled what i like to call an "Autumn" tune. Very enjoyable indeed. This album is definately worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Our saviours are here, 5 Mar 2004
By Rob86 (Derby) - See all my reviews
As the lyrics go in savannah, the opening track "get on your knees we're saviours". Hundred reasons seem to think of themselves much more highly in this album then the last and so they should. This album has cemented their place in the british rock industry with their great care and attention to their lyrics and their amazing power to bring these lyrics to life with crunching guitar riffs and incredible sense of energy. Many people seem to have disregarded this album saying that its not as good as IAOS but I beg to differ. This album is right up there with it and at times jumps over the bar set by IAOS. Songs like Harmony, What you get and Stories with unhappy endings are HR at their very best.

This album is incredible from start to finish trust me, go buy its worth every penny you pay for it
