The ear is regarded as the most reliable place to get a consistent reading of the humans core body temperature. You should measure your child’s temperature regularly to understand their normal reading, so you can recognise signs of fever early.

How do Braun Ear Thermometers Work?

Eardrum emits infrared radiation.
Infrared radiation passes through the lens filter.
Depending on the specifications(material, thickness, production process etc.) the lens filter lets pass a reduced amount of infrared radiation.
The sensor of the device receives a reduced amount of infrared radiation.
With a complex algorithm specially adjusted on the specifications of Braun lens filters the ThermoScan ear thermometer converts the infrared radiation into a temperature being shown on the display.

An infrared ear thermometer and the lens filter always work as a system. To get an accurate reading it is mandatory to align specifications of device and lens filter.

Advantages of a Pre-Warmed Tip:

	With the pre-warmed tip: Unlike other ear thermometers, Braun ThermoScan ExacTemp features a pre-warmed tip. It minimizes the cooling effect that could result from the insertion of a cool probe tip. The pre-warmed tip helps ensure accuracy time after time.
	Without the pre-warmed tip: A conventional tip at room temperature has a cooling effect on the ear canal. This cool-down effect can result in an inaccurate temperature reading shown on the display. A cooler temperature in the ear canal could also affect the accuracy of repeated measurements.

What does the Guidance System Do?

	Checks position of the thermometer in the ear and confirms the accuracy of the measurement. Beep and light helps to eliminate handling errors. The probe of the thermometer has to fit securely into the ear canal during the complete measuring process before a long beep signals the end of the temperature reading.
	A light provides additional accuracy. It flashes during the measuring process as long as the probe is securely positioned and lights up continuously once an accurate reading has been taken. If the probe has not been placed correctly in the ear canal, it will be indicated by the Guidance System.

Easy to use, even on the smallest of ears, quick and non intrusive so baby doesn't wake up! just as good on grown ups. Can't recommend it enough.

I've been using a Braun thermoscan for four years since our first child arrived. I regard it as absolutely essential for the safe caring of children. With one of these, you can take a child's temperature accurately and in a couple of seconds, even if they are asleep.

Children can develop extremely high temeperatures very quickly. With one of these, you can accurately monitor the progression of the illness and check that the Calpol / Neurophen is doing its stuff. If the temperature doesn't respond to the medicine, that's a sign to monitor things more closely and get help if the temperature goes too high.

There's a bit of technique required to get consistent readings, but follow the instructions and you'll do fine. Basically you turn it on, place it in the ear, pull back the ear lobe and press the button til it beeps. It's usually worth measuring both ears - any significant difference between the two can mean an ear-infection on one side, or your technique needs checking! The battery seems to last forever so no worries there.

Contrary to Braun's advice, I've found you can re-use the disposable caps quite a few times (it could get very pricey if you didn't). A quick rub with a baby wipe gets them clean, though if you start to get inconsistent readings then try changing the cap.

We have 3 small children and there's no way I'd be without one of these, so very very strongly recommended to any parent.

Forget old thermometers - if you have kids get one of these. It saves all the agony of keeping them still while a traditional or simple electric thermometer reads the temperature. Just make sure you buy the spare disposable caps on Amazon when you get the machine.
