Synopsis

Martin Ritt's HUD is an adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel HORSEMAN, PASS BY, successfully transformed into an entertaining and ambitious contemporary Western. Set on a Texas ranch where Cadillacs, cattle, and transistor radios coexist uneasily, the film stars Paul Newman as the hedonistic, arrogant, and rebellious farmhand Hud Bannon. Hud is constantly at odds with his kind father Homer (Melvyn Douglas), who blames him for the death of his brother. Hud further strains their relationship when he begins taking his nephew out drinking and chasing women. But when it appears that Homer's herd of cattle may have contracted foot-and-mouth disease, he asks his son's help and advice. Predictably, Homer and Hud disagree about what should be done with the cattle, so Hud tries to gain ownership of the ranch--which could mean taking away his father's sole possession and livelihood. Beautifully photographed, the film has a clean visual style, emphasising both the open spaces of the Texan landscape and the Cadillacs and Dr. Pepper signs that adorn it. Patricia Neal won an Oscar for her role, and Newman's performance gives the film its wit and considerable velocity; his character, Hud, is morally reprehensible but still likeable and charismatic, and he carries the film forward to its surprising and poignant ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars provocative and damnignly powerful , 28 Sep 2008

guilt, old traditions ,loose morality ,drunken binges are the superficial vices of hud, played by Newman in his most charismatic and stylish turn EVER in an act which is almost a textbook performance,he defines the soul of a tough, hard texan cowboy with harmony and honesty in a world hard to survive ,his aging father is clashing with his rebellious son and their quarrels are just explosive ,caught in the middle is lon as the grandson admiring his uncle for his multiple talents with both rodeos and sex bouts .

Everyone has to find their own niche and truth and Patricia neal is the housekeeper on a texan ranch -she is the fragile link between the 3 MEN.

the dialogues and the camera are totally in control of the headstrong wild characters, this is easily Newman at his peak and the cinematography is superb with the herd massacre to the night time brawls and Car drives .

Texas looks surreal and at times like a desolate kindom where newman rules the roost, this movie shows paul is just as good if not better than brando.

This is just one of the most unusual and intellectually challenging puzzles hollywood has ever made and even today it shocks you with it's radical view of the Texan society .The conventions, traditions and culture assume a parody in the sense that the characters are too cool to let themselves be provoked by the environment ,the sangfroid just carries on as if their insouciance will correct every wrong and if not then they do not give a damn ,i suppose that is the gist of life anywhere and this movie is the absolute truth in every detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure brilliance!!, 1 Sep 2009
By Ava (UK) - See all my reviews
This is a brilliant, beautifully shot film. The story is gritty and engrossing. Paul Newman is brilliant as always but everyone is this film is near perfect. Patricia Neal is particulary good as the house keeper. The film does last over two hours but you would never know it. I became so engrossed in this family's story that it was quite a shock when the film came to an end.

4.0 out of 5 stars brooding Newman, 7 Nov 2008
What a good film! Paul Newman is a fantastic actor and really captures the attention of the viewer as the moody Hud in this beautifully shot movie. Although I am generally adverse to watching films over two hours because I tend to fall asleep I was wide awake through the whole duration of this! Newman has the ability to fit any role he encounters which adds to the brilliance.
