This is a legendary 1947 first recording of the Brahms Requiem,originally issued on 78rpm records,and the convertion to CD is remarkable,particularly regarding the singing by the Vienna Singverein and the soloists.However equally remarkable is the listing of Elisabeth SCHWARZENBURG as the soprano soloist.I am sure this will cause deep consternation to the many devoted admirers of the recently deceased Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.I trust you will correct this error a.s.a.p lest Amazon themselves become legendary for a different reason!.
This is not a criticism of the service I receive from Amazon which is exemplory.

I already had the HvK/BPO Janowitz/Waechter prize-winning 1964 recording, re-issued in 2002 under the DG "Original Legendary Recordings" - but this EMI version is much better. I'm no expert, so both performances themselves are probably excellent, but the EMI recording quality is definitely higher. So, given the choice, this is the one I'd choose.

Also, this recording was made in war torn Vienna in 1947, not long after the end of WWII. According to the notes, written by Richard Osborne in 2004, this "...recording has never been surpassed" due to "the sense we have of the enactment of a real requiem, a cry de profundis from a desolate people in a desolate city." Schwarzkopf told him "It was very special. Certainly, we were remembering those whose lives were lost in the war".

It's a beautiful piece of music, sung and played beautifully - I have no hesitation in highly recommending this CD.
