5.0 out of 5 stars A luminous piece of work full of the right kind of shadows, 30 May 2004
Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre did it again, following the excellent “Iphigénie en Taurine” and the sublime “Armide” and with the aid of an irreprehensible cast of singers here we have “Orphée et Eurydice”. This version has several attractions: the fact that is the Parisian version of 1774, not the Berlioz version of 1866, and consequently closer to what Glück imagined; another aspect is that Orphée is sung not by a contralto or mezzo-soprano, as we are used to, but by the brilliant American tenor Richard Croft who gives a new dimension to the famous aria “J’ai perdu mon Eurydice”. Adding to both this features we are saluted with a full power conducting that lifts this opera high above the Hell where the shadows are so understandably touched by Orphée’s music. All the energy that emerges from this CD finds it’s appropriate channel through the “Air de Furies” prelude to one of the most moving moments of the opera when Orphée sings to the shadows of Hell, so well incarnated by the “Choer des Musiciens du Louvre”. All ends magnificently again with the “Air de Furies”, this time just with the orchestra. Another high moment is the trio “Tendre amour, que tes chaines” where the voices of Croft, Delunsch and Harousseau bled so beautifully just before the joy of the two lovers reunited to the sound of the “Ballet general”. Don’t think twice before buying it, worth every penny spent!
