Faith comes from hearing and the more I hear the work of Sir Adrian Boult the more faith I have that he is a safe pair of hands conducting any music. Never flashy or self-promoting in life, his reputation will increase as we get further from his death. Some superstars in the musical firmament in their lifetime are already falling from the sky. When the BBC eased him out of his position of Conductor of the BBCSO, apparently because of age, they cut their own wrists, for he began a new and fruitful collaboration with the LPO. Here he conducts the LPO in a first-class account of Schubert's 'Great' Symphony in C. Perhaps the interpretation is at times a little reserved and understated as compared with the Solti version which is top-notch, but this has its own logic and compelling force and moves purposefully on and on. The LPO respond with distinguished playing. Ths recording was made in 1972 but the transfer to CD is excellent. The Schubert symphony is accompanied on this CD by a very beautiful and meditaive account of Brahms Alto Rhapsody with Janet Baker, one of the very best accounts of this work, and also the Academic Festival Overture. This is good measure, pressed down and running over. Boult is a master in Brahms - see his account of the symphonies. This is another bargain at a low price.
