5.0 out of 5 stars Don't worry about the sound: this is Mahler interpretation at its best, 14 Aug 2007

I'll keep it short. If you love Mahler's music and don't already have these discs then get onto your Amazon one-click button straight away. If you want to hear how an exceedingly great conductor in his prime interpreted music by his friend and mentor then do the same thing. The sound is, of course, monoaural, but has been recovered from the original masters very well indeed - the CBS black disc pressings in the 1960's were CBS pressings and anybody who dimly heard performances through the crackle at that time knows what I mean! The CD incarnations are so much better.

Even if you have never heard this music before these are discs worth buying. You may move on to other great (and very different) recordings by the likes of Bernstein (DGG), Kubelik, Barbirolli, Mehta (Eloquence) or Haitink (in the Christmas Concerts live Phillips set) but you will never regret having heard these magnificent Walter performaces. They are classics of recorded music.
