5.0 out of 5 stars Now this is some game!, 5 May 2004
By Kieran (Hertfordshire, UK) - See all my reviews
I've been looking forward to this game's release for some time now, and I can honestly say that it hasn't disappointed me in the slightest! Everything about the game is extremely polished, and the presentation, as is usually the case with EA, is exceptional.

The create-a-fighter option is superb, really giving you the opportunity to create a character that resembles yourself (unless you happen to look like the Elephant Man), and it even manages to capture the whole "out of the ring" decisions such as who to fight, which affect fighters (well, promoters) in real life. Even the opportunity to add people to your entourage adds yet even more realism to this great game.

And so onto the gameplay itself. I can honestly say that I have never played a boxing game this realistic. Part of this is probably due to EA's innovative "Total Punch Control" mechanics - you can really "feel" the punches connecting {not literally, otherwise I wouldn't give the game 5 stars). Even getting up from knockdowns has been given an innovative makeover. This game really does have it all.

If I had to pick one fault with this game, it would have to be the ring announcer, Big Tigger. We want Michael "Let's Get Ready To Rumble" Buffer, dammit! Either way, this soon gets put to the back of your mind when you start trading blows with the greats of today and those of yesteryear.

Like Lennox Lewis, this game will probably be making another appearance this time next year - though like Lennox, it's hard to see how they can possibly improve on this!

5.0 out of 5 stars GAME OF THE YEAR !!, 18 May 2004
this game is excellent, the best boxing game that ea sports has ever done !
what i really like about this game is the career mode, i have to say that because i haven't played anything else yet except my virtual self, thats right, you can make a good likeness of yourself in create a boxer mode. you can alter just about anything you would dare to imagine on the human face, you can stretch the chin, bring the eyes closer together and pick what size ears you would like and everything, the game is THAT GOOD !
another thing which is much better than ea sports other boxing games is that you start from a lowely 50th in the pecking order and you have to fight your way to the top, and if you lose a fight you dont get to fight that same fighter in about three comeback wins time, which is realistic, if not good, the only gripe i have about this game, and its a very slight gripe..
is that theres no black shorts for your boxer to wear, which is a shame, because i created mike tyson in create a boxer mode as he dont appear in the game, so i invented him out of thin air, great aint it ?
this game is so deep its gonna keep you busy until 2008 never mind until next years game, theres so many angles, so many fighters you can make that you could never get bored, buy this game if you like boxing, and buy this game if you dont, ONE GREAT GAME !

5.0 out of 5 stars Bout time PS2 had a great boxing game, 27 Feb 2006
Excellent stuff from EA games. If you have been looking for a boxing game for PS2 this is well worth purchasing.

Choose your favourite boxer and fight at different levels (heavyweight, lightwieght etc) and progress through the rankings until you get a shot at the world title.

To begin with the controls take a little getting used to but once you do you will have great control over your boxer and will be pummelling your opponent into a bloody mess.

The graphics are excellent and the fighters look great Learning to be patient and look for openings and knowing when to back off becomes important as does keeping your punch meter high so your punches don't run out of power and there's nothing more satisfying than winning that title though after completing the game you may not return to it much.

This is an excellent buy though.
