To the non-guitarist, a full album of classical guitar music from Cuba may at first seem to be a little strange. However, Cuba was under Spanish colonial rule for around 400 years and it is therefore no surprise that the guitar features prominently in most types of Cuban music. This music has also been subjected to many other influences, such as Afro-Cuban rhythms and 20th century classical music, and all are represented on this fine album.

Leo Brouwer, born in Cuba in 1939, has become widely recognised as one of the most prominent and influential composers for the guitar. His work ranges markedly in style from avant garde to neo-Romantic. It is a shame perhaps that only three of his pieces are featured on the album, but nevertheless these provide an excellent insight into Brouwer's music for anyone new to it. "Cancion de Cuna" (Cradle Song) in particular, represents Brouwer at his most lyrical and inventive, and is beautifully played here. In similarly lyrical mode are the hauntingly beautiful "Prelude" and "Cancion triste" by Carlos Farinas, whilst the more rhythmic Afro-Cuban influenced side of Cuban music is well represented by Hector Angulo's "Cantos Yoruba de Cuba". Space does not permit discussion of the rest of the album, but overall this a beautifully balance programme of music.

Havana-born guitarist Marco Tamayo has won several important international guitar competitions and has performed widely throughout Latin America, Europe and Asia. His considerable technique, coupled with the lyricism and rhythmic vitality of his playing, and his natural feel for the music of his homeland, all make this an album not to be missed.
