Has its faults, but it's still a great game, 15 Jul 2004
I bought this game around a fortnight ago, and I still enjoy playing it. Its great to be able to play as the wrestlers I supported from yesteryear, greats like Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Jake the Snake, Owen Hart, Rick Rude, they are all on this game and you can recreate all the classic matches from the 70's 80's and 90's, (and even have the bad guys win, I had Savage beat Hogan a few times for fun).Gameplay wise, the game is sound but not without its flaws. The main thing I guess is that sometimes the wrestlers perform a move but not at the same time, it sometimes seems like the invisible man is fighting in the ring as well as the wrestlers themselves. It seems a bad flaw for such a good game, however it doesn't happen that often. The commentary can be a bit ropey at times, but there are some nice things said about the wrestlers involved in the matches and it isn't all that bad. There's a good selection of moves on offer, the moves are very accurate to the ones that the wrestlers used in real life. The ability to link moves together as in the previous two games is still there, but without as much detail as before. Weapons from under the ring don't seem to do much damage either which is no big deal really considering its about wrestling not brawling. The wrestlers themselves are very accurately modelled, a lot of work has gone into making them look like the real thing. Its great when you pick a wrestler and see their entrance, it brings back memories I must say. The arenas themselves are very detailed too, with places like Madison square garden and the Pontiac silverdome among them. Game features include an era match mode, where you fight your way through the decades wrestling the best each era had to offer. The classic match mode featurs matches from the 70s 80s and 90s, with you having to finish them off. These modes make for an interesting game. All in all I'd recommend this game to anyone who saw wrestling in the 1970's /1980's onwards, when wrestling was about great matches that had a story to them. If you can live with the odd glitch of a move and slighty off commentary, I think you will love this game as much as I do. If however you prefer wrestlers doing daredevil stunts like the wrestlers do today, I'd stick with Smackdown. I only wish they had this sort of thing when I was ten!
