Rock bottom prices for high spec equipment, 29 Jan 2004
Ok. Just about everybody have now twigged that this is probably one of the best bargains out there. This little PDA packs a punch and at a basement price. Its similar to its brother the Yakumo PDA Delta, but has a 300Mhz processor in its stead. With a mono voice recorder, built in MP3 player, backup software, picture viewer, some games and an expansion slot this PDA has the functionality similar to some Ipaqs. OK, so it’s an unknown brand, but where else can you get a 300Mhz PDA from with this sort of functionality. Yakumo have taken Amazon by storm with all of their products, providing low cost high spec goods. Judging from the Yakumo PDA Delta sales being continually out of stock (at the time of review) it looks like this is the next best thing. This one looks like the control pad might be better quality, but does not come with a USB cradle. I have it’s little brother which I bought prior to the Delta 300 release and have been very happy with it. However if I had waited a week longer, I would definitely have gone for this one so I’m kicking myself a bit. Nevertheless, I don’t go anywhere without it and have had a lot of fun personalising it by skinning (try using ‘Dashboard’, ‘pocketblinds’ or ‘Wisbar’ skins to change the look of the PDA – something you can not do with Palm operating systems). The only problem is that since Yakumo is not as established as the Compaq Ipaqs, there are not as many accessories for it, so you may have to hunt for better cases. I got a case with my PDA Delta but it’s a tacky tan coloured one, although having said that I’m still using it as it is functional. You could go for a Palm, but I had a Sony clie running Palm OS and having now used the ‘transcriber’ function available on the Windows Pocket PC and find it much easier to use. You can basically write as you would do on paper and the operating system will recognise the words. No more input of separate letters to write words (although you can do that), and you also have the option to use a virtual keyboard to input. If you are a first time buyer in PDA’s and you are not too bothered about having a brand name, the Yakumo PDA Delta 300 is an ideal start. With good functionality at a low cost, you’d be hard pushed to do better.
