Amazon.co.uk Review
A sneaky and surprisingly smart horror flick, Cabin Fever sets up all the clichés of its particular subgenre (what might be called the "sexy young people go into the woods" horror movie, featuring hostile redneck locals, dead animals on hooks, cars that suddenly stop running, and so on) and by the end has played a clever twist on every standard element, often to darkly comic effect. What's the plot? Well, five sexy young people (Rider Strong, Jordan Ladd, Joey Kern, Cerina Vincent, and James DeBello) go to an isolated cabin where they contract a nasty bacteria that eats their flesh; this, combined with a bad-tempered dog and a party-loving police deputy (Giuseppe Andrews, giving a particularly funny performance), leads everyone into confusion and bloody chaos. Some of the ironic twists are a little obvious, but most of them effectively subvert your expectations to entertaining effect. --Bret Fetzer

3.0 out of 5 stars Extremely let down by this!, 4 Oct 2004
By L. Andrews "jointhepartyuk" (Newport, South Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you are a horror fan and you regularly scour the website for new horror movies, you couldn't really miss the publicity surrounding this film. The comment that mostly stuck in my mind was someone referring to CABIN FEVER as the next EVIL DEAD. Of course, this would wet my appetite enormously.

I missed the cinema release, and so eagerly awaited the DVD version. And what a letdown.

It's a real shame that the film turned out to be what it was, as on on the documentary included on the DVD director Eli Roth has a real, genuine passion for horror movies, something you don't often see in the movie industry any more. You could see that he knew what he was talking about when citing the numerous influences of his career (one being personal encounters with David Lynch no less), and completing the documentary you would expect one hell of a horror movie to be made.

Sadly this is not the case.

For me, the film had no atmosphere. there was nothing new (some will argue that this is not the point, that CABIN FEVER is a throwback to the horror of the late seventies and early eighties), the characters were cardboard, the story had no satisfying conclusion... even the premise was ropey. flesh-eating virus invades four people staying in a cabin in the woods and kills them off one by one. Where did this virus come from?

The movie would have been good ifthe virus had actually turned the teenagers into crazed zombies (at least then it would have been a GENUINE throwback to the horror of the sevnties and eighties), but cabin fever is quite simply an excuse for ropey gore and casual sex. Of course, gratuitous nudity is a requirement of ANY tribute to horrors of the aforementioned period, but the film itself has got to have something to hook old school horror fans other than this.

An what the hell was with that karate-kicking kid? Why did he do that? What did have to do with the movie?

I give the film three stars and not two because at least Eli Roth seems to know what he's talking about, and he loves teh same movies that I grew up loving. Hopefully he will stick with horror and make us a much needed movie to revive the present day horror industry.

Mind you that leg-shaving scene was pretty cool!

5.0 out of 5 stars bad marketing, 24 Feb 2005
By Mr. J. G. Mcrobert-thompson "scaryjim_" (Wiltshire UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
this film was marketed to tragic fans of freddie and Jason . What a shame .. Fans of Lynch and quirky weirdness will love this. There are few horror moments but hilarious characters . Like twin peaks with moments where you might squirm - a great first film for Eli - i hope he goes on to do better. If you just want blood and guts and a boring plot that leads you by the hand and ends with the hunk/hottie killing the whatever then go somewhere else- there's plenty of forgettable teen horror flicks out there . If you want something that will stick in your head and make you chuckle and squirm at the same time- get this. It's amazing that QT can pay homage to his favourite ninja revenge flicks to the praise of the critics but Eli gets put down for doing the same to horror film. A damn shame - i'd give this four stars but i'm giving it 5 to bring the terribly dismall average up .

5.0 out of 5 stars CABIN FEVER. A review., 6 Nov 2005
This film is about a group of young people, who go out on vacation to a cabin in the woods. Due to an unfortunate incident ( see the film to find out !! ) one becomes sick. Very sick ! Gradually the other members start to panic & fear sets in as to what's going on.
This film is gory. This is to be expected of a film of this genre. What appealed to me especially was the streak of black comedy on offer. That helps alot in films like this !! At one time, something repulsive happens, then later, a curiously funny thing is going on. Great !! However, this is still a full on horror movie & works brilliantly.
