Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The titular Max Payne is a man on a mission. His family has been slaughtered by thugs and his job as a tough, street-wise cop is shattered when he's framed for a murder he didn't commit. All in a day’s work really… Rockstar's new title for the GameBoy Advance follows the plotline of the original PC-based title, converting the first-person 3-D action of the PC original into a third-person shooter more suited to Nintendo's handheld. And happily, it all works rather well. Given the restricted controls of the GBA the basic movements are all nicely mapped so getting Max around the impressively detailed environments is blissfully easy. Also present is the bullet-time feature, which made the original game stand out from the crowd. Bullet time borrows heavily from the movie The Matrix, allowing the player to slow down time and throw Max through the air while firing ludicrously powerful handguns with incredible accuracy--all good stuff and nicely ported onto Nintendo's handheld.

The story rattles along at a fair pace, with dialogue appearing in comic book-style boxes onscreen to flesh out the plot and describe the objectives which lay in Max's path. Given the nature of the Max Payne franchise (i.e., it's ostensibly a first-person PC-based shooter) the translation to a portable format could have been a disaster. Happily it isn't. There's a flow to the game that just works and the graphics for all their miniscule size have a fairly high degree of detail. It's not all plain sailing however; targeting villains can be a bit hit-and-miss and sometimes there's the awkward feeling that the hero can only fire at certain angles but if you can take that in your stride there's a lot of play for in this title. --Chris Russell

Manufacturer's Description

Max Payne is the stylish, urban, revenge-driven story of a fugitive cop with nothing to lose. Based in New York City's grimy underground, the game is a fully realized rendition of the best-selling PC and console hit, and combines narrative-driven, cinematic gameplay with the latest in handheld videogame technology to deliver an intense Game Boy Advance experience.

Max Payne's signature action-packed gameplay is now even more accessible on the Game Boy Advance. Max can choose from over 8 weapons as he fights his way through 12 levels filled with some of New York City's most sinister inhabitants. By utilizing Bullet Time, players can gain an edge over their enemies with Max's slow motion gunplay technique. The classic graphic novel scenes return to tell this twisted story of deception and despair.

2.0 out of 5 stars Forget this games potential, the fact is it's poor., 14 Sep 2006

Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
I got this game on the basis of online reviews, and I have to say, that no matter good an idea it was, the flaws are huge and ruin it completely. This isn't a game with a few problems that you can ignore, it's plain bad because of them.

The shooting is ruined by off screen enemies, which you can't see. Seeing as the point of this game is in it's shooting, this problem ruins any enjoyment you might get. Also, the great and unique atmosphere is ruined by the horrendous lag, with more that a few enemies on screen the whole action slows down (and is even worse in bullet time). The graphics may look good in screenshots as well, but when playing they seem very tacky, and make the whole element of hiding, ducking and diving pretty worthless.

I like discovering average games with good storylines like this, but the flaws in this game make it a bad game, and not very enjoyable, my advice is to avoid it.

...high powered weapons and the usual Bullet Time feature.
Both ofthese have been brought to the GBA version excellently, with the abilityto slow-mo blood splatter walls looking impressive. And yes, there is theoption to turn off the gore.
This is not an easy game, progressionbeing painful sometimes, but in all it is a worthy addition to yourcollect and many hours of bad-cop action.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough of a good thing, 4 May 2004
An exciting and violent shoot-'em-up. Good graphics and gameplay make Max Payne an addictive game. I was disappointed to finish the game so quickly, but relieved when two "new" adventures were offered as a reward. Imagine my disgust when the two "new" games were identical to the first, except one had a timer to beat, and in the other the baddies just caused slightly more damage and required a few more bullets to stop them. There is no variety in the position or number of enemies or weapons/ammo.

These glaring faults are inevitable, I suppose, with such a small cartridge, but if it had not been for the quality of the action itself, I would be kicking myself for wasting my money.

Recommend: Borrow this game, but don't buy it.
