4.0 out of 5 stars The Soul of the Souk, 5 Mar 2004
By keith e rusby (isleworth, middlesex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Compilations often fall short of covering the music they intended to, and the Rough Guides are sometimes prone to this. Not the Music of Morocco however. Given the diversity of the music of Mororcco, this compilation does extraordinarily well in capturing this diversity, warmth and excitement of a musical culture that can be traced back through hundreds of years, and has been influenced from Bagdhad to New York, Andalucia to Timbuktu. Throughout it all, though, it retains it's strong Berber traditions.
The cd features some of Moroccos biggest artists including Jil Jilala and Mustapha Bourgogne, the likes of which you'll hear blasting from a taxis radio , hurtling round mountain roads towards Marrakech.
The cd opens with the wonderous sounds of Nass Marrakech and you're imediately aware of the influences from the Moorish / Andalusian tradition as the group feature flamenco flautist Jorge Pardo. Then there's Gnawa music which has become massive in Morocco, so much so that there is now a huge Gnawa Festival in Fez every year that attracts artists and audiences from all over the world. Gnawa originated from the descendants from the Moslem peoples of the Southern Sahara and beyond and has now incorporated rap, hip-hop and garage - a true cross cultural melting pot! Just listen to 'Hirja' by the Moroccan rapper Dar Gnawa - messmoric.
Women artists are well represented. The all women Bnet Marrakech pound out gut thumpinh rythms while delivering beautiful vocals, while Fatna Bent El Houcine sings in the more clasical Arabo-Andalusian (al aita) style.
Simply, this is a superb cd. If you've got any interest in music from the African continent, or been to Morocco and want to relive the 'Medina experience', or you just want some fantastic music, try this. The sleeve notes are very well written, detailed and very informative; a history lesson in Moroccan music! This is the Soul of the Souk!
