5.0 out of 5 stars A Smorgasbord Of Delight!!!, 30 Jun 2004
By A. Lansley "Landslide" (Suffolk, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I got interested in Rune Grammofon because of a long standing interest in ECM. I had been collecting Metheny, Jarrett and expanding my interest to other artists on the label. One evening I heard a programme about the Molde Jazz Festival in Norway on BBC Radio 3 which featured Supersilent. I wrote the name down and explored and ended up buying Supersilent 6 - an ECM/Rune Grammofon release. I thought the digipac was cool and when I listened to the music I was blown away- like nothing else I knew! When you have listened to a lot of music it is quite rare to find something that really surprises you. So my appetite was whetted and off I went to find more goodies on the internet. I have been consistently impressed by all the stuff I have heard so far on this label. I know some have compared to artists like Autechre, but this is somehow really soulful and really now. The best thing about Rune Grammofon is that you get a strong feeling that this is a personal project, headed up by someone who knows and cares about music. You get everything from Classical to electronica and experimental, with everything else inbetween.
The artwork on the covers of the digipacs gives you a great feel for the aesthetic at work in this music and helps to make you feel that you are really buying into something. Irresistible eye candy - you won't want to sell these!
This double CD and book set provides music fans and fans of contemporary graphic design a very cool artefact. It will be a source of influence for time to come. My guess is that once it has sold out it will become a collectible item - like ECM's Sleeves of Desire. Get it now and it will open a whole new world of sonic landscapes and ideas. (Don't forget to shred your credit card immediately after ordering this compilation - be warned, it could lead to trouble!!!)
Enjoy.
