5.0 out of 5 stars M & A - a performance for today, 3 Aug 2004
By Mr Andrew E T Abbott (Canterbury, Kent United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is a title which is bound to attract agenda and baggage from the past - namely the previous occupants of the roles . For some memories will be too strong to allow anything else , but for those who can be receptive and expansive to something new and of today , this DVD is very very good . Sylvie Guillem and Nicolas Le Riche give beautiful compelling performances - stunning actor/dancers in their own way .Anthony Dowell as the father overviews the proceedings with his usual command and presence . The filming is varied ( long and short take )combining drama and detail - but works well - ballet does not have to be perpetual sugar coated almond / chocolate box presentation !
The rehearsal / background footage is warm and engaging with some very nice humour ( the most out of tune piano you've ever heard )YES there is a bit of the micro ( hair talk ) as well as the macro - the combination makes any programme / drama human . Overall a knockout - if you're willing and able .

5.0 out of 5 stars Marguerite et Armand, 23 Oct 2004
By A Customer
A beautifully made DVD that will allow Sylvie Guillem's fans to watch her amazing technique and truly emotional performance of Marguerite, again and again.
Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lesson in how not to film ballet, 16 Oct 2004
By A Customer
Even Sylvie Guillem cannot save this. It is an object lesson in how dance should not be filmed - far too many (very unflattering) close-ups & poor editing. The "documentary" is utterly uninformative - again, no full shots of the dancers, and very disjointed.

Terrible disc - avoid.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Disc
This disc is poor value for money both in terms of content and performance. Sylvie Guillem is unable to convey the fragility the role requires and Nicholas La Riche is neither... Read more
