Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

All Years Leaving is an acoustically-flavoured debut album from the Stands that shimmers with harmonies, harmonicas and jingle-jangle guitars and is indebted to all things Dylan, Byrds and Beatles. It's small wonder Noel Gallagher is a fan, although his poor record as a tipster shouldn't deter interest. Pleasant if not entirely ground-breaking, "All Years Leaving" at times casts singer/songwriter Howie Payne's combo as either a British version of My Morning Jacket or as brethren of one of the very good Liverpool postcode bands ("Outside the Door" could be the Coral on one of their skiffle rolls, "Here She Comes Again" could be the La's, "I Need You" could be "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" by Dylan--if he was from Merseyside). When the ectoplasmic spectre of Lennon finally emerges through a psychedelic mist on the waltztime "The Big Parade" and the more electrically scabrous "The Way She Does", heads spin and hearts flutter. Perhaps these two tracks offer the Stands their best way forward. --Kevin Maidment

4.0 out of 5 stars The Stands - an affair with the 60's?, 23 Feb 2004
I wondered what The Stands album would be like since everyone in the music press seems to be content with stating they are just like The Beatles, Dylan, The Byrds et al. That influence is there without a doubt, and some of the songs tip a definate nod to some of the best tunes by those artists, but don't let this put you off. When you hear "always is the same/shine on" you will be convinced: Gentle acoustics, echoes of Lennon at his best, gliding bluesey piano, the bass and drums that could be right off a Plastic Ono band album, and some gorgeous harmonica make for one of the best tracks this year.
The gently psychedelic " The big parade " is a waltz consisting of wobbly double tracked vocals, acoustic guitar, mellotron, and cello and sounds like the best record The La's never made. The sounds on this track work incredibly well together.
All in all, some fantastic harmonies are scattered through this record that unashamedly sound like Lennon and McCartney, the Beach Boys and The Byrds. It's very easy to make these comparisons, and the sound is certainly 40 years old, but it's there to be enjoyed and listened to for what it is..there's something very interesting going to happen when these guys really get going.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good debut, 26 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Your not going far wrong if your songs sounds like casts-off from The Beatles' Revolver album. The Love You Give is a perfect slice of introspection, Here She Comes again is vintage Teenage Fanclub. Their Neil Young meets Dylan style flirts with tradition rather than bristles with life, but it's just jaunty enough to be contemporary. Im looking forward to hearing more from The Stands in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A return to the day, 9 Jun 2005
Last Year I was at the Isle of Wight Festival and simply lying back in the sunshine enjoying whoever it was palying on stage. After a while i realised the band i was listening to were jamming away at length in the middle of a song in a way that seems lost on most bands these days who harbour an unwillingness to inprovise or detour from an exact live replica of their studio tracks. The band i was watching was 'The Stands' and the song was an elongated version of 'The Way she Does'. Drum Solo's, blues riffs and hammond organ!! I immediatley went and bought the album and was delighted to hear Brydsesque jangly pop all the way through the album along with psychedleic and country influence giving the album a beautifully crafted and diverse appeal. For me 2004 had many great albums but this is possibly the best. It has a typical scouse feel to it but is ultimatley more rewarding than anything by the Coral or Cast and for me better's Lee Mavers' harmonies and jangly guitars (although well worth also checking out). If you get a chance to see them live do it. If you don't...just enjoy this unapologetic beautifully crafted 60's influenced rock/pop record.
