They've done it!, 23 Jan 2004
I first heard of Maroon 5 as soon as I found out they were supporting Matchbox Twenty, in the summer of 2003. Having heard of them I instantly downloaded a song off their website called Tangled. I liked it but didn't think much of it. However, having seen them at Matchbox Twenty, I knew this was a band to watch out for. They were by far (Yes, beating The Darkness) as the tightest band I've ever seen live, and upon seeing them a second time a couple of weeks later at Manchester Academy 3 (with only 50 other people!!!) they performed amazingly with a stunning cover of Nine Inch Nails's Closer. I bought the album straight away and fell in love with it.As amazing an album it is, there is one track that stands out from it, and it is this. Harder To Breathe. This track has everything - Attitude, Guts, Perfection. It is the perfect song to start off the album, not just lyrically but musically too. The other songs on the single, Secret and Ragdoll are much more laid back than Harder To Breathe, which is probably a good thing due to the sheer intensity of the latter. Secret, an album track is a nice laid back song, but nothing to cry home about. However Ragdoll on the other hand, an exclusive to this single, is amazing. The only thing I can imagine that stopped this making the album is that it is too slow and doesn't fit anywhere in the album. Nevertheless this is up there with the classic B-sides. And there is of course the video to Harder To Breathe. Not much going on here I must say. However there's something about this video that makes me want to watch it over and over and over. All in all, an amazing buy. Definitely worth it!
