5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Bargain!!!, 27 Jan 2004
By Dr. A. Large - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a really excellent set of Nocturnes by John Field, Chopin and several other composers of the nineteenth century played on instruments contemporary with the composers, as follows:
John Field, Broadwood 1823;
Chopin Vol.1, Pleyel 1842;
Chopin Vol.2, Erard 1837;
Contemporaries of Chopin, Erard 1837.

John Field was from Dublin but toured Russia on numerous occassions and could be considered to inventor of the Piano Nocturne. His Nocturnes make very pleasant, relaxing listening indeed. Sadly, the excellent 'Noontide' Nocturne is not included here. The soft-voiced Broadwood is the perfect vehicle for these pieces.

Chopin's Nocturnes are perhaps a little more adventurous with their greater chromatism and are played with a delicacy here that just would not be possible on a modern concert grand. Both the Pleyel and the Erard are very sweet sounding indeed with absolutely nothing of the creaky antique about them. The complete set are recorded here; the entire set is not available anywhere else on period pianos.

The fourth disc has examples of the genre by contemporaries, several of them virtually unknown. Perhaps the best work is Glinka's, but there are also interesting works by Clara Schumann and Alkan. But the works of the less well known composers are also equally worthwhile.

Bart van Oort is a scholarly pianist but his performances could never be described as dry. His greatest ability is to be able to bring subtle dynamics to these works, whilst never resorting to forte/fortissimo playing. He brings out the best in both the works and the instruments. The recording quality is excellent, too. This is a must have set for anyone who likes historical pianos and is an absolute bargain, too!
