5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning technique, 15 Jun 2009
By Guy Whit (London, UK) - See all my reviews
Marilyn Horne was one of the most phenomenal singers of the third quarter of the 20th century - perhaps of that century altogether, as far as mezzos go. Her range was stunning, incorporating soprano roles in her early days (she sings Maria in the Italian version of La Figlia del Reggimento here, but in the mezzo range) and the full range of mezzo soprano showpiece roles - Rossini in particular, in which she had no peers. This recital is early (1965) and it showcases her indomitable voice to perfection, with staggering coloratura brilliance and fine legato singing where required. Apart from one or two lapses of taste in the Meyerbeer (she decorates to excess perhaps), this is an amazingly virtuosic recital. The cover is an exact reproduction of the original record, complete with outrageously over the top photograph of the great woman. Joan Sutherland and she were to form an eduring partnership which produced some of the most astonishing singing of the recorded era, so it's nice to have Horne take centre stage and particularly good to hear her conducted by Henry Lewis, her then husband, as a contrast to the Richard Bonynge recordings with which she is more associated (Semiramide, Norma etc - with Sutherland). The whole recital is a joy from start to finish. Five stars are for the performances (and the voice, which is quite simply unique); the volume control, however, needs turning up a notch or two.
