Rugby League is a frenetic sports sim where you can choose from 35 teams, with official licenses that include the National Rugby League (NRL), NRL Telstra Premiership, State of Origin, City vs. Country, the Australian Kangaroos and the New Zealand Kiwis. There are 25 realistic stadiums and to add to the authentic atmosphere there is play by play commentary by Channel 9's Andrew Voss. Gameplay includes high tackles, ankle taps, multi-person tackles, injuries, sin bin, interchange, knock-ons, cut-out passes, sidesteps, offloads, fends, break tackles, scrums, slow-mo replays, grubber kicks, chips, punts, field goals, bombs and more. There are also accurate player abilities and skills modelled on detailed data supplied by official NRL statisticians, NRL Stats. There is comprehensive player, team and competition customisation with the ability to alter all elements of players including the face, skin colour, head shape, hair style and colour, height, weight and 12 separate skills attributes.

I have been waiting over 5 years for a rugby game of this quality to be released. After the disappointments of Championship Rugby manager this game has really delivered the goods. Accurate player names and kits, lots of competitions to be unlocked and superb gameplay make this one of the best games I have ever played. Commentary is the best I have heard on a sports game, with every players name mentioned and some of the tackling animations are truly amazing. The slow motion kicking is a revelation and a delight to master. The game is not too hard to pick up and not so easy you can master it sraight away and all in all is the product that all rugby (league and union) fans have been waiting for.

It's been a long time coming but Rugby League has finally arrived on the PS2.The graphic's are absolutley superb and very detailed with real player likenesses.All the official teams from Australia's NRL and Britian's Super League are featured plus Internationals.The create a player feature is an excellent addition and the menus load very quickly.
There is one or two niggles in the game regarding correct refereeing decisions on the pitch but hey this happens in real life anyway and this doesn't detract from the game at all.
There are 5 difficulty levels on the game so there is a comfortable skill level for every gamer.
It is really simple to pick-up and play even for non-rugby fans as this really is a top sports title in general,I'd also recommend it to Union fans who like to watch League.The commentary is good and mostly accurate and the gameplay and passing is very fluent.
Overall this is excellent effort from the game developer's and very much recommended to all sports gamers.Superb.

After hearing much about this game as it was in 'work-in-progress' and being very impressed with screenshots, I could not wait for its release and I have not been disappointed. I was in Oz when it was about to be released over there and it broke their records for pre-sells and has been at the top of the charts since xmas. Here, there have been supply problems which will probably hinder sales but I would recommend it to anyone. The sport lends itself to computer games as the rules can be quickly grasped, with fewer technicalities than Union. All rugby league rules, including 40-20s are included. The graphics are good, though the players could be larger on the screen during gameplay, put the stadiums and pitch markings are very realistic. Commentary is as good as any I have heard in a game with all players named and lots of other phrases thrown in. There are 4 levels of gameplay, and it appears that each level of the game is harder in the Australian rather than the English League, another element of realism. So long as the far too easy first level is avoided this is a game that has long-term appeal. There are extra teams and competitions to unlock, as well as video clips, both good extra features. Big tackles can be made (but be too aggressive and the ref is not afraid to penalise, talk to and sin bin you!), hand offs, dummies and side steps can be performed. I would advise any gamer who enjoys sports games to take a look at this and I hope that all the positive aspects from this will be developed in a follow-up game by either the same or a bigger company. The biggest element within the gameplay to improve is to make it harder for breaks to be made from scrums but aside from this a much more rewarding game than most in the sports genre.
