5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Superb, 15 Mar 2004

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
During the 1960's Sir John Barbirolli was a frequent guest condctor with the Berlin Philharmonic. Amomg his most memorable achievements was to bring the symphonies of Mahler back into the Berliners repertoire. In the post war period Mahler was little played in Berlin. Concert master Michael Schwalbe once told an interviewer that at the time most orchestra members were not interested in Mahler but within a couple of years Sir John had gotten them to love him. His first Mahler with them was the 9th. The orchestra was so impressed with the performance that they asked Barbirolli to record it with them. That now classic performance is on EMI. Here is another classic from the archives of Sender Freis Berlin, a 1966 performance of the 6th Symphony with Barbirolli and the Berliners. It is one of the most bracing and harrowing performances of this work that I have ever heard.

To start off this performance is about 8 minutes faster than Barbirolli's studio recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra. That is not surprising as Barbirolli generally adapted a brisker pace in concert. Barbirolli also adaps a practice that Mahler did in concert of reversing the two middle movements so the Andante is 2nd and the Scherzo 3rd (if it bothers the listener they can simply program the cd to play the movements in printed score order). This has been a debatable point among Mahlerites and every time I have heard this way I did not feel it worked. Here though I think Barbirolli makes a very good case for this ordering. He takes the Andante faster than most so that the great string melody at its climax instead of having an ecstatic feeling has one one of unbriddled joy. The Scherzo coming after that comes across as a crushing blow further enhancing the tragic nature of the score.

The playing by the Berliners live I feel is better than the Philharmonia in the studio. Make no mistake, the studio performance is superb(and quite different from this one) but the Berliners are a notch up here. The exquisite playing of the winds in the quieter opening pages of the Andante is remarkable while the braying horns in the Scherzo and Finale are sheer terror. Of course the "singing" by Barbirolli that can be heard at times in the studio performance also pops up here. The recording is mono but is first class. Body , clarity and no hint of congestion. I was listening to this performance for 10 minutes when I glanced down at the back cover and saw the word "mono" and it took me a minute or so afterwards to realize it was. In a performance such as this one it won't be noticed much. Testament has done a fine remastering job on an already good tape from Sender Freis. Very fine notes detailing Barbirolli's relationship with the Berlin Philharmonic in the last decade of his life. In a crowded field of Mahler recording's this one is simply superb and listeners owe Testament and Sender Freis heartfelt thanks for making it available.
