A substantial update to Creative's Jukebox 2, the imaginatively titled Jukebox 3, improves on a winning formula with a host of features including a considerably smaller case, improved playback controls and faster file transfer.

Of the many new features the Jukebox 3 has, one of the major improvements over the Jukebox 2 is the player LCD screen and menu controls. The Jukebox 3 now features a scroller wheel on the side which enables fast and easy access to all the options and available music. This does take a bit of getting used to, but after a while it'll become second nature. Data transfer from a computer can be done via USB or FireWire (SB1394 as they like to call it). Transferring files and creating digital audio is a breeze with the Creative PlayCenter 3 software.

Because of the sheer amount of storage space the Jukebox III has, you don't have to worry about having to remove songs to fit new ones. The 20 GB storage contains enough space for about 8,000 tracks in MP3, WMA or WAV format, which is a lot of music. With up to 11 hours playback on one battery pack, it'll deliver pleasure of an audio kind for a long time. The unit also features an additional slot for a second battery pack giving up to 22 hours of audio playback.

Playback quality is what's key to any digital audio player and the Jukebox III doesn't disappoint. The player has more audio settings than anyone would know what to do with. Some of them are a bit gimmicky, but the EAX setting is the most interesting as it can be set to different music styles such as rock, pop, classical and jazz. With a firmware upgrade (downloadable from the creative Web site), a user-definable equaliser is available. The Jukebox III can record/encode files directly from an audio source via the optical/line-in socket on the side of the player. You can record in either MP3 or WAV audio formats at different qualities ranging from 64 kbps to 320 kbps.

The Jukebox 3 package includes headphones, carry case, credit card-sized remote control, USB cable, software, battery pack and battery charger/main unit. In addition to this, the unit is supplied with a wired remote control that incorporates a cool back-lit display, an FM radio tuner with 32 presets and a built-in microphone that enables live recording. This is more than just a small update to an already super product; it's a major overhaul and well worth getting even if you already have an MP3 player. In terms of features and sound quality for the price, I doubt this will be beaten for some time; its at least £100 cheaper than the market leader (has a capital 2nd letter instead of 1st) for the same storage capacity and gives you the FM radio (while the offer lasts); crucially - at least for someone as old as me - you can also encode MP3s from sources other than CDs. This means that my entire collection of vinyl and cassette music can be available.
Other advantages over the market leader (for anyone using Windows at least);
its software recognises more CD and DVD drives not just the most recent (oooh, the trouble I had with the other one),
it comes with both USB and FireWire cables (the other one has the USB as an extra you pay for).
Also you can buy and install your own replacement batteries rather than sending the whole unit to the manufacturer.

The only downside is that it is bulkier and the body is entirely plastic as opposed to metal with a plastic faceplate.

Had my jukebox 3 for a week now and l think it is a fantastic bit of kit. I know the zen and ipod look sexier, are more compact and lighter to carry round in your pocket but these criteria weren't top of my list of desirables.

What clinched it for me were the added features and extras at a bargain price which £ for £ make it a great deal. The hardware and software are both great and l echo the comments made elsewhere. I can now carry round my entire music collection, plug it into any stereo system using the jukebox 'line out' connection and listen to my hearts content. I select playlists compiled from hundreds of albums and even use the dinky remote to skip tracks etc. without getting off my butt - slob heaven! The fm tuner add on is going to be really useful when I'm away from home working. Best of all the overall music sound quality is fantastic and I'm even learning to appreciate the pre-loaded classical music the jukebox comes with.

Overall, if you're thinking of buying one of these, just do it - you wont regret it.

I've had the 40 Gig version of the JB3 for over a year now. Although I've been very happy with it, there's no getting away from the inconvenience of its huge size, especially when compared to an Apple iPod. If you can cope with that though, this is excellent value, especially with the inclusion of the FM remote.

It's got some other tricks up its sleeve, which the iPods can't match. Such as:

* a removable battery, with space for a second one alongside, to give you a total of 22 hours play time. Plus, you won't have to return it to base and stump up £50 or whatever when the battery dies on you, like all those iPod owners are starting to do now!

* playlists are much more flexible. With the latest iPods, you can (at last!) create a playlist on the fly. But you can't remove tracks from it, or reorder them like the JB3 can. You have to recreate your playlist from scratch.

* it has a line out (two in fact) on the unit itself. The iPod's line out is on its dock.

* you can record on it. The FM radio remote doubles as a microphone

If you want a spend a bit more - actually, a LOT more! - you should also check out Creative's Zen NX. This is more the iPod's size, although still a bit bigger. It gives you 60 Gig of storage for less than the 40 Gig iPod. It also has some of the JB3 advantages I've listed above, including that all-important removal battery.
