Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Sacred challenges many of the known conventions of PC role-play gaming. Emphasis is placed on the six player characters, each having their own unique skills and abilities, along with a different in-game starting point and storyline to introduce them. Of the six characters, the Gladiator (close combat fighter), Wood Elf (ranged weapons) and Dark Elf (martial arts assassin) are the typical RPG characters. SACRED introduces the Seraphim (mystical angel), Battle Mage (hard hitting magician with both swords and spells) and the Vampiress (knight by day, blood-thirsty vampire by night). Sacred does not limit the player’s appetite for exploration and discovery. Over 70% of the kingdom of Ancaria is free to explore, straight from the start, with the remainder being unlocked further into the interactive story. The kingdom is huge, with over sixteen different regions, each containing many settlements, villages and towns. Each town features sub quests, with over two hundred to complete, intertwined within a central quest of over thirty main missions.

Sacred brings many new game play features to the RPG genre. Players are able to create ‘combos’ – groups of attacks, spells and abilities, which can be linked together into one overwhelmingly powerful sequence. Creating the combo requires the player to ‘study’ with a skill master; once trained they present a force to be reckoned with. Players are also able to take to the saddle; riding a steed across the great expanses and also into combat, attacking from horseback

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, if you know how to play!, 16 Jul 2004
This is a great game, but you have to know what kind of game Sacred ist! It's not really a Role-Playing-Game. It's not an action game. It's no 3D graphic wonder! It's something else.

Why not a RPG?
Well, the story is VERY rare, there are not many dialogues or bigger quests and the character system is all about skills (Sword lore, riding horses and so on...) and attributes (Strenght, Dexterty, Charisma). That's it.

Why not an action game?
Because there IS this rare story, the few quests and the character system. Action game's normaly are very linear... Sacred isn't! Do want you what and when you want. Go where and when you want!

Why not a graphic wonder?
Well, have a look at the screenshots and you'll know why! The map and the scenery are 2D. Ok, they're very detailed an look quite good, but they're not the state of the art! The characters and monsters look very good, 3D - detailed, you can see every part of you armor, your weapons and even you're amuletts, BUT some of the character animations are terrible and unnatural!!! Some of the characters run as if there would stick something very large in their... Ok, i'll stop here :-D

This sounds all very negative. But it isn't. Why? What kind of game is Sacred?

Well, it's just slaying monsters and evil persons... AND IT'S FUN!!! There is a big world to be explored, there are VERY much different weapons, armor and opponents, the characters' voices sound very good... Even funny :-D and even the small quest are fun!

Oh, i forgot to tell about the details of the game... Well i'll start with the heroes:
-Gladiator (m, Close combat-fighter): Don't care about your enemy's. Just kill them, you'll win!
-Seraphim (f, Mystic battle-angle, uses weapons and magic): A little "weaker" in close combat than the gladiator, but she can use magic and looks better ;-)
-Wood Elf (f, Typical Greenpeace-Member, best at ranged combat with bows and crossbows!): Kill your enemy's with ranged weapons, because YOU will be killed in close combat! (Looks good too)
-Dark Elf (m, Close combat-fighter too, but a little more agile than a gladiator): Place traps, fight with your "arms and legs" and poison your enemy's! (That's one of the terrible animated ones)
-Battle Mage (m, Magic, of course): Name's program!
-Vampiress (f, May switch between vampire- and knightform): Close combat when a knight, klaws and bites while a vampire... Looks nice ;-) but terrible animated!

(m = male, f = female)

That's all about the heroes, now the equipment:
All you weapons, armor etc. raises to higher levels, just like you! That means that you have an iron sword at the beginning (Level 1) and at the end of the game (Maybe... Level 255), but it's more powerful in the end!

(Oh, i forgot, there are 3-4 difficulties for EACH hero! That means you COULD play this game for more than 2000 hours :-D, if you explore the whole world)

What else, ah the fights. Fighting is simple, click and hold your left mouse button on an enemy and wait... ;-) With your right mouse button you can activate special combat arts (Very strong attacts, magic...) Then you have to wait until they are reloaded, then you can use them again.

And, last but not least, your enemys. Orcs, goblins, dragons, animals and "normal" people, of course undead (Skeletons, zombies and gouls) and, of course, a demon! So, nothing thrilling!

Ah... It's difficult to descibe the game and i forgot the multiplayer part, because there are much problems with it. A patch shall change that. But that's not important, it's much fun in singleplayer too, so if you like slaying-games, with lots of blood, monsters and possibilities buy the game! It's not that expensive, is it?

(I hope you could understand this text, you know, i'm from Germany and i'm still learnign English ;-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Orc Slaying Joy, 23 April 2004
By N. Tanter "Tantona" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Diablo clone? Possibly...but then Diablo bore a number of similarities toit's predecessors (e.g. Dungeon Siege) - please don't hold that againstthis game and assume that you know what you're gonna be getting.
This game dumps you right in the middle of an exciting fantasy world inwhich you will encounter the usual array ofgoblinoids/demons/undead/bandits/peasants etc, with the underlyingstoryline being to do over some mighty demon or the other - but for me thestoryline aspect becomes largely irrelevant as soon as the action kicksin.
I was impressed by the graphics from the outset, they're veryimpressive both for the scenery and for the characters/npc's, but withoutbeing so good that your pc won't be able to handle them (unless yourmachine is prehistoric).
Movement and interaction is as you might expect a simple left clickoperation.
Combat is very straight forward indeed..ie see an opponent and leftclicking on it for normal attacks and throwing in right clicks for specialattacks when these are charged up (to be honest it's only the combat whichhas dropped my rating down to 4 stars - continually trying to keepclicking on a single opponent when you're in the middle of a scrum of 25people/monsters who are trying to rend each other limb from limb is reallyquite frustrating. I think combat would have been better served with theDungeon Siege 'click on the opponent and you'll keep hitting them untilthey're dead' approach.
There's a really nice selection of items to be found in this game thatincrease either damage inflicted/one of the various protection statistics(protection against physical harm/fire/poison/magic etc)/ level relevantand special attack stats.
These weapons/armor/items are often usableonly by one particular class but can always be sold on if you can't usethem.
The classes themselves are all varied enough to keep you interested:
1) Gladiator - obviously an Arnie lookalike who packs an awesome amount ofdamage as well as soaking up plenty.
The cornerstone of any good groupbut a wee bit susceptible to ranged and magical attacks. Most peopleschoice for starting character as theres very little thought involved inplaying him
2) Wood Elf - The ranged attacker of the group, very skillful withbows...speed of attack is quite awesome and arrows leave neon tracers thatare reminiscent of Star Wars blaster attacks
3) Seraphin - Female Angel - I haven't really played this character muchto be honest as I got bored with it very quickly indeed!
4) Dark Elf -Martial arts specialist who attacks very quickly and effectively with twoweapons, great fun to play.
5) Battle Mage - The main magic based selection obviously. You need tocrank up the protection levels early on with this guy as most of hisspells are ranged and anything actually getting through and hitting on youtends to dice you pretty quickly.
He's not a total wuss with hand to hand weapons, but if he went into thering up against a rabbit with big nasty teeth I know who my money would belumped on :)
6) Last and by no means least is the Vampiress. By dayshe's a fairly sturdy warrior and by night she comes into her own andunleashes her various vampire powers to devastating effect (actually to bemore accurate she can change to a vampire at any time with a minor hppenalty occurring in sunlight, but this is so insignificant that you canwander round in vampire form most of the time without thinking aboutit).
She can summon bats and wolves to protect her amongst other things and isprobably the most enjoyable and challenging class to play.
My only gripe about multiplayer is the annoyance of trying to gain/shareloot fairly. Because combat involves repeatedly clicking on your opponentit is often the case that whoever deals the last blow is still merrilyclicking away and consequently clicks on the items that drop from thebody.
Very frustrating and often leads to arguments!
Obviously if you're playing a lan game with the family this is probablythe norm anyway!!
In conclusion I would advise buying this game and playing it until DungeonSiege 2 is released in August - did I mention that there is hours ofplaying time involved? This will take you ages to complete in 'bronze 'mode and then you can go on and do it all again in silver and gold - allthe while getting more powerful and finding better stuff. Superb.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kept me out of trouble down under, 2 Jun 2004
By Peter Stiles (Milton Keynes) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Working in NZ for 4 month I needed something once I'd finished (again) BGII/TOB and NWN/SoU/HoU. This filled a very nice two-three weeks of play.
Gameplay is *more* than diablo, there is a consistent, interesting plot and no random dungeons ruining your life - everything has a reason. Myriad side quests (and you can tell the reQuestor to go and jump!)
I found the UI easy to get used to and liked how it worked. The skills/feats that your character gains are tough to find and seem randomly placed - so you get the feel that multiple playing can generate much more distinct final characters than NWN (where you pick all your skills and all my characters end up quite similar).
I've started a second play through and am intending on trying the LAN multiplayer. The developers are happily releasing patches for gaming issues so they are addressing problems and adding features quite nicely. Enjoyed it much more than Dungeon Siege, but not quite as much as NWN/BG.
