After initial caution at a Spiral Stairs solo career based on a sometimes erratic input on the Pavement albums, ranging from the sublime (Date With Ikea, Hit The Plane Down etc.) to the underwhelming (Passat Dream); I have been pleasantly surprised by both Preston School Of Industry albums to date and with 'Monsoon', I feel he is beginning to hit his stride and play to his strengths - alt. country with sweet hooks. 'Monsoon' seems to occupy remarkably different areas to those that Malkmus works in these days, though I feel both have created strong albums since splintering off from the greatest alt. rock band of our time. 'Monsoon' is a fine collection of songs and another worthy addition to the Malkmus/Stairs/Pavement history.

When all 'All this sounds gas' came out there was alot of press -and the songs on the album were essentially songs written while Spiral Stairs was in pavement but were never recorded. And after listening to the album you wonder why? These were far superior to the final couple of pavement albums.
After Pavement split both Stephen Malkmus and Spiral Stairs under the name 'Preston School of Industry' released albums. While Malkmus's sounded more like a later period Pavement lp, All that was Gas was a truely great album.

Last Year Malkmus released his 2nd album, Pig Lig, with the Jicks,and again the results were pretty disappointing - the initial releases had a free live disc that had far superior versions than those on the main release and were much more accessible.

A few months later Spiral Stairs releases 'Monsoon'. 11 tracks, 37 minutes - a no frills album starting where he left off. Again there is a large layered style throughout though the arrangement are still predominantely guitar based. There is a opavement edge but also part alt-country (Jeff Tweedy plays guitar on one of the tracks). Again the catchy melodies flow throughout the album, but with has more produced edge than the portable-multitrack recorded all this sounds gas. What lets the album down more than anything is that a few of the songs are just not very good - some more experimental that just don't hit the spot and given the class of the others these standout.

I rate the Preston School of industry albums against any Pavement release excepting Slanted and Enchanted, Crooked Rain and Wowee Zowee of course.
