Amazon.co.uk Review
Give or take two or three choice (if predictable) cover versions of songs by
Bread and the
Bee Gees,
Bring It On is the largely self-penned debut album from guitar-strumming
Fame Academy runner-up Alistair Griffin. A waggish former milkman and English literature student from Whitby, Griffin likes to write his own songs (how novel) and his musical preferences have been known to take in the
La's and
John Lennon.
Impressive though this might be, none of it meant very much to the grumpy Fame Academy judges ("bland and "unemotional", they said) who, herein, are proved to be partially right. Too many light, soft songs on Bring It On seem to have been written in a gooey-eyed state of lovestruck semi-consciousness. However, when Griffin gets urgent and hits upon a truly memorable tune he really has got what it takes to make a pop career beyond his 15 minutes of teatime fame on the gogglebox. Two such examples are the splendidly catchy "Hungry for Love" and the heart-fluttering summer pop infatuation of "Something About Her", the latter finding Griffin putting those English literature studies to awesomely ambiguous use with his strategic use of the word "defile". Write this chap off at your peril. --Kevin Maidment
