5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Addictive, 28 Sep 2004

You can use any one of the 99 ships in 1p mode & change ship between continues & I quickly realised that you need to pick carefully for each level. Also, the levels all have subtle variations each time you re-play them. (so you get level 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc) This gives a good incentive to play over & over again.

It's very important NOT to use cheats with this game as they will only make it pointlessly easy. The whole idea of R-Type games is that you need to learn where the safe places on the screen are & where enemies will come on to the screen from. Also, the Bosses are, in true R-Type style, incredibly difficult & seem impossible to kill for the first few attempts.

This game is a must for any shoot-em-up fan. Buy it now... go on, what are you waiting for?

3.0 out of 5 stars It's not bad, just a little dull and repetitive, 27 Mar 2004
By A Customer
It's not a bad game at all- infact, if you own a PS2 and love old-school side-scrolling shooters then this will be right up your street. The graphics are 3D (though the game basically takes place in a 2D plane) and look very nice, with some excellent effects cropping up from time to time. R-Type Final plays very much like its predecessors, and does hold up to them very well. If you've played one of the original R-Type games then you will know what to expect with this instalment.

The problem I had with the game is that it can get very repetitive going through the early stages over again as they move along very slowly and get very dull. Why on earth there are 100 ships to collect I really don't know, it adds little to the game as they really aren't much different to each other. It's more of a gimmick, and something to do once you've finished it- though I had no motivation to collect them at all.

If you own a GameCube or a DreamCast, try and get hold of Ikaruga- it's probably the best side-scrolling shooter ever made, fullstop. Treasure really know how to add longevity to a 2D shooter, with the option to practice every individual section of every level to get better and better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent game., 12 Aug 2005
By Amicie (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
R-type Final is a fantastic game, with all the old fighters, from previous r-type games, and loads of new fighters too. I also love collecting fighters on this game, and finding information about the fiendish "bydo" (basically the bad guys). You can play in AI VS MODE - you get to compete against your own fighters and also other peoples fighters. I think any gamer would enjoy this, and certainly anyone who enjoyed the earlier versions. Loads of strategy and skill are required to play R-type Final. Do you have what it takes?
