After the last unimpressive outing of the Medal of Honor franchise on consoles, and stiff competition for many other similarly themed titles, Pacific Assault has a lot to prove. The first spark of originality is the setting in the Pacific theatre, where the enemy is the Japanese Imperial Army rather than the usual Nazis.

The main demo level revealed at time of writing is set during the fierce battle for Guadlcanal as you try to repel a counterattack from hundreds of enemy infantry and attacking aircraft. Although the graphics are predictably improved over Allied Assault, the main technical advance here is the artificial intelligence of your squadmates. In a nice touch of extra realism you no longer find health power-ups but must protect your squad’s medic so that he can tend to your wounds. In fact the whole system of receiving injuries is now far more realistic as you get whiplash and motion blur and can even be knocked out on the ground and yet still recover if your medic is alive and finds you.

With over forty other levels in the game we’re also promised the chance to drive jeeps and tanks and even ride in a US bomber mission, switching between control of five separate gunner positions. It’s not clear yet how the game will stand up against other next-gen WWII titles but so far Pacific Assault is looking good and has a number of interesting new ideas to justify its presence on the field. --David Jenkins

Aaaah Pacific Assault - the much lampooned world war 2 game set in the pacific.

Personally, I love this game. It's argued that this game is not realistic. Well, it is a Medal of Honour game - since when have they been realistic?

Anyway, pretty much everything has been said about this game so i'll sum it up in the form of pro's and con's

Pro's:
+Your squad. Probably the first war game to get the friendship between characters in war just right. In Vietcong it was crap, Men of Valour failed miserably, Call of Duty 1/2 had no character relation or friendships whatsoever but Pacific Assault hits bullseye!
+Graphics. I've seen reviews here saying they're rubbish. What!? Compared to games like Doom 3 and Prey which over do it with the shiney chrome effects, the graphics I thought conveyed great atmosphere. you acctually felt like you was in a boiling hot jungle. Your squad sweats and it acctually looks real as opposed to crap and shiny looking. Shadows from leaves and tree's cast on your weapons and your squad mates - you truly believe you are in a jungle 'paradise' here.
+The squad commands. I liked them, so ner.
+Even if you disagree with all of the above you should buy this game simply for the Bloody Ridge level, which happens to be fucking great.
+Voice acting. Medal of honour sets a high standard as usual.
+The Verge of Death sequences. Especially great when you expect your medic to revive you but instead a nice japanese chap sticks his bayonet in you. Tasty.

Con's:
+The first mission 'Makin Atol.' Boring and rubbish in my oppinion.
+The 'wild ride' car section in the Makin Atol missions - you don't even have to shoot anyone and you'll succeed. Rubbish.
+You can shoot down a Zero with a Tommy Gun. Rubbish.
+The accuracy of some weapons are slightly suspect.
+It takes sometimes 3-4 shots to kill an enemy which can get on your nerves a bit.

If you're not bothered about realism or weather it's pro-american or anti-war then get this just because it's good fun. I have a blast everytime I go through this, and i've recently installed it again and am now playing it with the pop-up facts turned on which is a kind of "directors commentary" on each level and is very informative about the war itself.

Since its arguably rushed release date and the resulting lack of "polish", this game has received a huge degree of criticism all over the internet (including here). However, I thought that for this price I couldn't really go wrong, so I bought this game, and I am very glad that I did.
In my opinion, the game succeeds in creating the all-important effect of atmosphere rather well, with intense fire fights accompanied by an epic-sounding music score that serve to create some engrossing episodes that are truly enjoyable.
As for the strange accuracy problems with rifles, along with surprisingly weak stopping power that many reviews point out, such incidents do indeed occur, but these are rare and vary from weapon to weapon (besides, every time a review mentions this about a FPS - as they so often do - it is ALWAYS exaggerated, and the same is true in this case).
As for the "bad" visual graphics and the ludicrous demands on system resources, this sadly has some truth in it. However, unlike most people who just bitch, I will inform anyone who may care to know that my frame rate pretty much never drops below 40fps on 1024*768 with all details on high, and I run this game like that with the following components: Athlon 64 3400+ (skt 754) 1gb Corsair Value Ram, ATI Radeon X800 pro 256mb. I am not making any accusations when I say this, I just want to give people a benchmark from which to compare before they buy, (which is what I look for in a review).
Anyway, as I allude to in the title, this game is DEFINITLY worth the price or less that you can get it for, and if you think you can run the game successfully, then by all means just buy it, unless you've just come from playing F.E.A.R at high details etc. I doubt you'll feel too cheated.

I bought this while waiting for "Half-Life 2" to be released. I enjoyed "Allied Assault" almost as much as "Hidden & Dangerous 2" and "Call of Duty", so I was hoping to enjoy this one as well.

The graphics and special effects are good and I like the idea of no health packs (although you do have a medic on the team to patch you up).

"Pacific Assault" is a big step forward in the series and this game is, generally speaking, an improvement on "Allied Assault". It is quite immersive and the fighting is intense. One also REALLY gets the feeling of being in the jungle. Very well done. The concussive effects of exploding hand grenades or artillery shells are the best I've seen in any game.

BUT: The game is boring, EXTREMELY linear and very repetitive. When playing "Half-life 2", I become involved and lose my sense of time. I will play for two to three hours without getting up. When playing "Pacific Assault", I am bored after thirty minutes, despite the atmosphere of the game.

I haven't completed the game yet (I am more or less halfway through) because of it being so boring. I finish a level and then I HAVE TO get up and go do something else. The problem is (1) the game is so linear that you cannot veer more than five or so paces off your course (think "Soldier of Fortune 2", just worse) and (2) the fighting is EXACTLY the same, every time.

You walk down the jungle path and encounter either a Jap patrol or a machine gun nest (or something similar) upon which a horde of Japs rush you, or you have to take out the macine gumn nest while a horde of Japs rush you. The frustrating thing is that it takes at least five bullets to kill one. Alternatively, you get to man a mounted machine gun to take out tanks/ zeroes/ torpedoes.

It sounds like a lot of fun, and it is, for thirty minutes at a time, once every few weeks. It is intense because of the sheer number of Japs in each and every attack, but therein lies the game's weakness. If you remember "Incoming", you will know what I am talking about. It is the same thing over and over again.

Allied Assault in tropical fatigues. Even though it is good otherwise, I do not recommend this game.
