Excellent headset. Nothing to complain about., 22 Jul 2006
I had the Plantronics DSP400 for some time for use with Skype on my laptop. I was very impressed with the sound quality and ease of use. However, the fold-up headband and smaller speakers were more aimed at laptop usage than gaming. So I bought the DSP500. The only difference I can see is the size of the speakers and the fact it has a solid headband (not a collapsible one as on the DSP400). The sound quality is nothing short of brilliant. The bass is excellent and the sound quality of the microphone is absolutely perfect whether you're whispering or screaming. They're comfy to wear for extended periods. Sounds in games become truly directional, and sound effects are played that I didn't even know existed before.
My only (small) complaint what's provided with the headset - no software/drivers and the instructions are literally a tiny piece of paper with a photo of where to plug in headset to a USB socket. You don't need drivers for basic usage on Windows 2000 and XP, so that's ok, but if you want to take advantage of the volume controls and mute button attached to the cable then you'll need the drivers. If you want to play around with the sound settings (graphics equalizer, bass, treble, for both microphone and headphones) then you'll need the PerSona software. Both of these can be found on Plantronic's website, but it took me a very long time to find them. Technically, this is a complaint about their website, not the headset.
Another thing I noticed about this headset was the performance increase. Playing several sounds at once using my PC's soundcard sometimes created a very short lag. When this headset is used as the sound device no such lag appears.
In short - brilliant headset.

One word says it all - Excellent!, 16 Dec 2003
When I first received the headset in its complex, but attractive box I felt overwhelmed. The green highlighted the headset in a star like shape. Opening proved to be a piece of cake , same goes for the easy understanding of the instructions given in the manual provided. If your one of those people who doesn't like to read manuals, Plantronics have succeeded in making it easy to follow along with theirs. When installing I found it extremely easy, just connect it up to a chosen USB port and let the set-up instructions take you through the installation. After installation I would recommend restarting your computer, as a precaution to make sure the driver loads correctly when rebooting. After this you get to set them up to what you would like. When I tested them for the first time I heard the test sound go from my left ear (starting off soft and gradually gets louder in left), then it moved into the right (loud back to soft again). I was impressed, nothing else to say but there great. When I tried it for the first time in game, Americas army operations (using team speak for communication with the microphone) I couldn't believe the way I was hearing my mates on team speak while clearly making out the sound from in game. While talking with my mates online as a general conversation, I am still able to determine where an enemy is within game. I can actually make out by the excellent headphones. For example : if there is someone behind me coming around a corner on steel steps, I will here them on the stairs coming up towards me and will be able to determine which side of me they are. To summarise this product I would say that Plantronics have done it again, they are outstanding in this field of gaming and I hope they continue the product line as it is the best out there for sure. You get a 2 year warranty which I have had to use from past experience but even still the service is outstanding and the people on the phones I found to be most helpful. Otherwise there is nothing else to say, except there are no bad points and the product outstands modern gaming and usage for listening o music and other features such as great for online video conferencing etc.

Excellent Quality...But..., 2 Nov 2006
I purchased this headset for two main chores. One, to talk to friends back in Australia via Skype or with my webcam on Messenger. Two, to add narration to tutorials I make for people who ask for them.
On both counts, this equipment has tested perfectly. The only negative, and it can make a difference to a novice buyer, is the neccesity to download the installation software from the manufacturers website. The two EXE files, one the main sound application to interface with the equipment, and two, an update, can be a daunting challenge for the beginner who has little or no knowledge of HOW to properly install devices.
That aside, I would recommend this headset to anyone who wants a crisp clear sound at a very reasonable price.
